I own over 15 different recordings of Chopin's Nocturnes, and I find these to be among my very favorite versions. Samson Francois produces a really lovely piano tone (especially with his right hand) and the playing is free and spontaneous without being the least bit eccentric - Truly; Individuality Without Eccentricity. The overall impression is one of a confident, sensitive, and thoughtful musician at work. Recorded in May & July 1966, these performances also give a window into a time when pianists were a bit less homogenized than at present. For example, listen to Opus 37/2 and hear some very individual phrasings and a rather unique tonal world (I wonder what type and vintage of piano was used for these recordings).
These 2 CDs are also noteworthy for the SACD remastering. On a high resolution audio system, there are moments when Samson Francois seems almost "in the room" - a truly haunting and beautiful experience.
Highly recommended!
