专辑介绍

by Jason MacNeil

Fearless of whom they may cover in song, from Sting and Irving Berlin to the mountain music of Gillian Welch, the group is comfortable doing what they do best -- performing traditional country the way it's supposed to be played. From the opening bluegrass harmonies on "Red Clay Halo" to the mandolin playing of Layne Bowen in its bridge, the band takes control of the album and never lets its direction stray far. With all performers taking lead vocal duties, songs such as "In a Town This Size" have an added luster to them. Rooted in a genre that sounds easier to excel at than actually realized, tracks like "Route 666" have a double meaning to them, not only the fire-and-brimstone ideas, but it's also a highway in the American Southwest. Other songs take a verse or two to find their sonic footing, but the cover of Hank Williams' "Ramblin Man" is such a case. The title track is a brief but terrific instrumental demonstrating the basic talent each member has. "Past the Point of Rescue," known better as done by Hal Ketchum, is one of the few tracks that doesn't possess the same drive or energy. Gina Blaber's vocals on "Fields of Gold" quickly atone for the previous tune, with a straightforward delivery that is softer than the original. But her best performance is on "Killing the Blues," which is a reworked blues song turned traditional folk. The closing numbers have a Celtic feeling to them, including the waltz "Hearts Touch." Closing with "Wings of a Dove," the song made famous by Ferlin Husky, the band has produced a credible and solid homage to both bluegrass and other genres.
