美国百老汇一众主创演员称他是“发电机”、“收割机”、“创造了百老汇历史的男人”。而在中国,许多不了解百老汇历史的观众,或许还是第一次听闻他的大名。但国人熟悉的名字:《西区故事》、《屋顶上的小提琴手》、《歌厅》、《贝隆夫人》、《理发师陶德》、《歌剧魅影》…… 这些赫赫有名的音乐剧都与哈罗德·普林斯的名字扯得上关系,而这些出自他手的经典音乐剧经久不衰,至今仍是百老汇、伦敦西区的舞台上不可替代的星,也是曾经创纪录地斩获21座托尼奖,是音乐剧史上绕不过去的人物。

普林斯艰难而辉煌的艺术之路
普林斯1928年1月30日出生于纽约。他是由母亲和做股票经纪人的父亲抚养长大的。他的家人是剧院的常客,8岁时,奥森·威尔斯的一场演出让他目瞪口呆。“我从一开始就对戏剧很感兴趣,很幸运。我早年遇到了一些音乐剧,但它们总让我觉得有点傻,我想,这也是为什么我的音乐剧鲜有愚蠢的。”2007年接受采访时,普林斯说。
普林斯毕业于宾夕法尼亚大学,年纪轻轻就开始尝试当制作人。1954、55年,他先后制作了《睡衣游戏》《该死的洋基队》,两部剧都将托尼奖最佳音乐剧奖收入囊中。不过,普林斯在业界名声大噪,得益于他与音乐剧界的“双子星”——斯蒂芬·桑德海姆、安德鲁·韦伯的合作,前者被誉为“美国音乐剧之父”,作词作曲俱佳,后者立足英国,从他手里流出来的旋律灌进过无数人的耳朵里。
首演于1957年的《西区故事》,是音乐剧史上一部“里程碑”式的作品,也在普林斯的艺术生涯里书写过浓墨重彩的一笔。该剧改编自莎士比亚戏剧的《罗密欧与朱丽叶》。这部剧的主创团队堪称“梦之队”:剧本作者是阿瑟·劳伦斯,曲作者是莱奥纳多·伯恩斯坦,编舞是杰罗姆·罗宾斯,身为制作人的普林斯当时在百老汇风头无二,而身为词作者的桑德汉姆当时还是21岁的新手。

普林斯始终是乐于冒险的人,“如果我听从了很多建议,我就不会有事业”。“他是迄今为止最好的音乐剧导演。”1984年接受普林斯的传记作者采访时,桑德海姆说,“他比大多数制作人更敏锐。他很认真,非常大胆,极富想象力,创造力无穷。他喜欢抓住一切机会。”普林斯有太多作品久演不衰。

《Prince of Broadway》经常被中文媒体译为《百老汇王子》,但实际上“Prince”指的是导演、制作人哈罗德·普林斯(Harold Prince)。这个译法倒也不能说完全不对,只是以普林斯的成就,叫“百老汇王”或者直译叫“普林斯与百老汇”可能更贴切,毕竟他可是史上获得百老汇戏剧最高荣誉托尼奖次数最多的个人。
去年百老汇上演的《百老汇王子》,剧目本身的创作和演出虽然并没有普林斯本人的参与,但这样一部致敬之作还是吸引了众多圈内大咖。

人们很好奇,像他这样已经收获了如此多成功和荣誉的人,在一份新的工作开始之前,对成功会有期待吗?普林斯总会搬出他太太的话,当记者问到她丈夫在制作《剧院魅影》时是否预料到了这将会是一部非凡经典时,她说:“《魅影》排练第一天跟其他任何一天都没什么不同,哈尔就是去跟那些才华横溢的人们一起工作去了。”“她的总结非常准确。”普林斯笑称。
普林斯自传
已是耄耋之年的普林斯依然非常关注当下百老汇的动态。当被问到最近有没有哪部戏让他产生过“天呐这戏太棒了真希望是我做的”这种想法时,普林斯说:“这种情况当然时有发生,不过大部分时候,我只是单纯地想赞美现在活跃在戏剧圈的这些年轻人。
“过去几年剧院的风向有些转变,不再像从前那样仰赖明星了,新的作者和导演也在涌现,更重要的是,关注的话题更加多元而有意义了。我非常钦佩那些敢于叙述人们意想不到的主题的剧目,比如《汉密尔顿》、《致伊文汉森》和《来自远方》。这些剧目都不是靠明星卖票的,单从主题看似乎也不太可能获得商业成功。

“如果你看过我的职业经历,就会知道我的大部分作品也不是主流话题,很多是从看似不会成功的想法而来的,回头看看我的职业生涯也还算成功吧。
这个时代的音乐剧舞台得以这般百花齐放,一定程度上要感谢普林斯。他慧眼识人,发掘了那么多优秀的演员和创作者,不仅帮助许多年轻人找到了一辈子想要专注的事业,也曾为那些以为自己职业生涯已经走到尽头的老戏骨提供过再次闪耀的机会。
我22岁时,哈尔·普林斯给了我一份工作。很快,他又给予了我一份事业。作为一个极富创造力的工作伙伴,他给了我「第二个家」,也给了我一份归属感,他还让我看到了戏剧人生本该有的样子。
过去的三十年里,我何其荣幸能够与他共事,更棒的是,进而成为他(在戏剧行业中)的“家人”。于我而言,他是对我最严苛的「评论家」,也是最支持我的「啦啦队长」。
再不会有像哈尔这样的人了——他的献身精神,对戏剧事业的热爱,遵守职业道德的作风和源源不断充满创造力的热情,这都已经传给了我和许多戏剧行业工作的人们。
