1959年1月12日，摩城唱片诞生于美国汽车城底特律，由非洲裔美国人戈迪创建。作为首个由由非洲裔美国人拥有的唱片公司——摩城唱片公司签约的歌手主要是黑人音乐家。上世纪60年代，正是美国黑人民权运动如火如荼的时候，诞生并成长在这个时期，摩城唱片公司致力于将黑人音乐介绍给世界。

1960年代末，Motown成为全美最大的黑人唱片公司。人们做梦也想不到，一个由生活在底层的黑人经营的唱片公司，竟能同时在艺术和商业两方面取得卓越的成绩。
