前卫摇滚是一种发源于英国的摇滚音乐类型，60年代中期到70年代在德国、意大利和法国得到了进一步发展。它从迷幻摇滚发展而来，从一开始就试图将音乐变得更有艺术的重量，并给摇滚乐带来广泛声誉。乐队放弃了简短的流行曲式，取而代之的是纯器乐和更多地用技巧将爵士或古典音乐的篇章组合起来，他们企图将摇滚乐带到那些成熟而获得尊重的音乐一样的高度。
