1963年4月，五个来自美国俄勒冈州的年轻人组成The Kingsmen。由于手头拮据，他们无法进录音棚录音，于是，他们便把自家车库改造成了一个录音棚。虽然录音效果不怎么样，但他们却由此创立了摇滚乐的一个新流派——车库摇滚（GarageRock），他们在车库里录制的单曲《Louie，Louie》可以看作是车库摇滚的诞生。

这首歌曲，本是黑人歌手Richard Berry的作品，后来被无数车库乐队翻唱过。同年The Trashmen发行单曲《Surfin' Bird》。

事实上，60年代的第一次车库摇滚运动并不能称为一种风格，他们之所以可以被归为一类主要是有以下几个共同点：乐队成员大都是在郊区排练的十几岁年轻少年，活力足，但缺乏创作能力与演奏能力，演唱时经常有喊叫，吉他摇滚（部分也有键盘），歌曲短小，经常使Fuzz失真效果器以得到更重的音色。在风格上其实民谣，迷幻，布鲁斯等都有。而其中不少乐队被后世追认为朋克的原型乐队。
