简单来讲，Post-punk是更精神内省、复杂多变、先锋实验的，更“艺术”的朋克。

随着地下音乐孕育出原型朋克的火种，1970后期，朋克运动兴起。但几乎同时，一些乐队跳出车库模版，挖掘迥然不同的领域，他们即所谓后朋克。

后朋克借鉴边缘文化，将艺术、电影、哲学、政治、批判理论与音乐环境拼接，青睐如David Bowie的先锋美学。相对地，对60年代The Beatles、Bob Dylan等范本般的主流摇滚文化定义，却显得不屑一顾。它创新开放、前卫自负的印象，将不拘一格的诗人气质表露无疑。

另类摇滚、哥特、自赏、工业、新迷幻、合成器流行...后朋克影响和推动了许多风格的走向。可以说后朋是另类先驱，作为另类元素走向主流前的探索与实践者，给了后来者无穷的借鉴与灵感。

Post-punk也受朋克DIY精神鼓舞，但摒弃朋克太过粗糙的商业化、全民化感观。后朋企图颠覆摇滚受众，与朋克的步伐无法协同。朋克向来叛逆直言不讳，而后朋克散发的艺术气质显然有悖于朋克教义；朋克脱胎Garage，而后朋追求Avant-garde/Experimental。所以后朋克也被称为Art punk“艺术性朋克”。

尽管后朋乐队风格各异，但概念上对摇滚的理解是一致的：冲击传统框架，抛弃霸权审美，强调试验性，融合Dub、Funk、Electronic、World等非摇滚音乐形式...于是krautrock(酸菜摇滚)、Art rock(艺术摇滚)、Glam rock(华丽摇滚)成为后朋克前卫美学路上的试金石。

虽然只有77-84的短暂历史，却为后来另类/独立音乐版图奠定了难以动摇的基础。

自1977年朋克革命后，在朋克的独立精神和直白表达的鼓舞下，许多乐队涌现出来。他们没有重复 Sex Pistols 的风格，而是延续了除朋克摇滚外的 Roxy Music,David Bowie,和T.Rex的道路，进入到一种更具实验性质的领域，形成了后朋克风格。
