♪关于Contemporary R&B
当代节奏布鲁斯也就是当今流行乐坛所谓的R&B。当代R&B作为节奏布鲁斯的一种延续，从根源上看，的确还是黑人音乐的后裔，但是从本质上讲，他早已丧失了原有节奏布鲁斯的特征，不管是音乐元素还是节奏特征，它都显得更为流行化和商业化，和50年代最初盛行的节奏布鲁斯存在很大的差异。
这种差异主要来自于70年代黑人音乐的演变。自从1969年美国《公告牌》排行榜用“soul”代替了“Rythm&Blues”的称呼之后，节奏布鲁斯和soul的关系变得越来越密切，以至于很难再soul和R&B之间做出严格区分。因此，70年代的R&B也就和soul画上了等号。而80年代以后，所谓的当代R&B主要是由70年代的R&B演变而来，也就是说，当代R&B主要是受到了soul式R&B的影响，而跟盛行于50年代的原始的节奏布鲁斯没有太大关联，跟布鲁斯的关系就更远了。
因此，可以得出一个结论：当代R&B是soul的变体，而非布鲁斯的后裔，因此当代R&B的称呼也仅是一种商业名词而已，本质上早已远离了“节奏布鲁斯”（既具有强劲节奏感的布鲁斯）的本意。尽管当代R&B没有了布鲁斯的音乐元素，但是作为soul的一种延续，自80年代以来，在当今流行乐坛产生了重要影响。
当代R&B在节奏上经常突出反拍的重音效果，演唱上主要继承和发展了soul的演唱方法，有很多滑音，有很多“加花”，讲究即兴演唱。在当代R&B领域，著名的歌星有Brain Mcknight、Babyface、R.Kelly、Monica、Macy Gary、Alicia Keys等，以及很多流行soul歌手及团体，在商业运作中鉴于R&B的广泛影响，也被唱片公司或媒体冠以R&B的头衔，如Whitney Houston、Mariah Carey、Toni Braxton、Boyz II Men等。
