贝多芬的第一号交响曲完成于1800年,当时他才三十岁,已发表过许多作品而享誉于乐坛。此曲的第一主题可与莫札特「朱庇特交响曲」起始的乐句相比拟,但是他模仿了海顿在快板前面加一段前导的缓慢导奏,以作为一个宣导。也就是说贝多芬的第一号交响曲虽受到莫札特与海顿的影响,但加以他特有的激烈力量与热情,仍然具有独特的风格。除了乐器与乐型处理法极其复杂外,本曲更是为贝多芬其他八首光芒万丈的交响曲奠定基础的作品。

在贝多芬的心目中,那个叱吒风云屡建奇功的拿破仑,是位树立自由精神,解放人类的新时代英雄。因此贝多芬将他的敬仰转化成音符,创作了第三号交响曲,欲呈献给拿破仑。但不久后突然传来拿破仑自立为王的消息,这使得贝多芬感到愤怒与绝望,并把已写好「献给拿破仑」的乐谱封面给撕了,另题「为纪念一位伟人而作-- 英雄交响曲」献给罗布可契公爵。在这首交响曲中,贝多芬首次突破了素来交响曲形式的藩篱,建立起个人的风格。乐曲气魄恢宏如狂风疾雨般,呈现出热情澎湃的情感怒潮,并交织出在黑暗与绝望中疾呼的勇气与抗争,以及光辉荣耀的胜利。此交响曲被誉为音乐史上最高杰作,同时也是贝多芬的交响曲开始迈入成熟的阶段,作品中所表现的音乐情感,有热情与温柔,有愤怒与幽默,人间的一切喜怒哀乐,都可藉以淋漓尽致地描绘出来。

十九世纪末在贝多芬的交响曲中,要数第四号最不受重视,大家都觉得此首交响曲缺乏其他交响曲所拥有的英雄气概与戏剧张力,更少了端庄持重的风范。然而却是九大交响曲中,最富浪漫色彩的作品,遂又有「浪漫交响曲」的别称。华格纳虽觉得诙谐第三章颇为华丽、辉煌,但形容这首交响曲是首「冷漠的音乐」。白辽士的看法则更为深入,他认为:「贝多芬摒弃了颂歌与挽歌般的调调,为的是要重拾第二号交响曲中那股较不高傲、较少气焰的风格,但是并未挣去那副艰涩的桎梏。大致来说,第四号交响曲的特质是活泼、清新、恬静的,甚至带著天国般神圣的纤细。」其实继「第三号英雄交响曲」之后,第四号所呈现的气质是彻头彻底的平静,使我们得以看到灵魂经净化后的事物与影像,就像由高处俯瞰一样,清晰可辨,一目了然。整首乐曲优美轻快,虽然编制不大,却极其稳健雅致,充满著明朗快活的情调,是一首亲切自然的杰作。

「田园」与「命运」交响曲同样于1808年夏天完成,在「命运」交响曲中,呈现出跟命运的搏斗,与最后的胜利,而「田园」交响曲则是舒发热爱大自然的胸怀。自古以来,这两首曲子被公认是拥有两种相反而互成对照性格的乐曲,而「田园」交响曲更是贝多芬少数亲自命名的作品,且在各乐章均有标题。由于乐曲本身亮丽动人,潇洒洗练,故与「命运」交响曲同被列为最受欢迎的旷世杰作。贝多芬自从听力衰退后,开始躲避人群,专心致力于作曲的工作,他将身心投向大自然,企图在美丽的景色中,忘却烦恼与痛苦。正如法国作家拉马提奴所说:「当人们在面临黑暗绝望的深渊之际,莫不寻访幽静的田园生活以疗心灵之伤。」,贝多芬也藉由创作第六号交响曲,描绘出他对田园的一切感受,及表达出人与大自然和谐融合在一起的思想传统,同时此曲也成了交响曲表现范畴的典范。

第七号交响曲完成于1812年,距第六号交响曲完成期间约有四年。我们都知道这段期间,正是贝多芬音乐生涯中最灿烂丰富之时,可说是他创作一系列交响曲,最长的突破阶段,此时贝多芬已42岁,作曲技巧更趋圆熟之境。本曲在1813年首演时,获得空前的成功,佳评如潮,尤其第二乐章忧伤的色彩极为浓厚,深切而扣人心弦,甚至应观众要求再次重奏,可见其迷人之处。此作品豪放雄浑,具有丰富的节奏感,华格纳称此曲是「舞蹈的神化」,李斯特则评为「节奏的神化」,这些正道出了第七号交响曲中,跃动的节奏和绚丽的色彩,有如蓬勃充沛的生命力,全曲充满著一片欣欣向荣的焕发气息,令聆赏者感到无比强烈的振奋。虽然它没有引人注目的副题,以致不若第三、五、六号交响曲般普受欢迎,但只要听过后,仍可以发现本曲具有无懈可击的完美,以及贝多芬那鬼斧神工的独具匠心,由此可见其价值,绝不在其他乐曲之下。

在贝多芬的一生中,他一直习惯于同时进行一项以上的创作,第七号与第八号交响曲几乎是在同一时期构想完成的,但两曲在搜索内容和表现手法上则迥然相异。广泛来说,两者皆属舞曲式交响曲,但第七号较第八号来得更形长大、华美,甚至有「舞蹈的神化」之称。但从另一个角度来看,两曲却也有共同之处,也就是说第八号交响曲虽不及第七号灿烂,但同样以舞曲化的部份为多,且似乎更具律动性。虽然在首演时未能获得热烈喝采,但本曲饱染了贝多芬特有的浪漫主义色彩,以及柔和、优雅、宁静、和蔼与愉快的情感。

贝多芬:第九交响曲(d小调 Op.125 “合唱”)(欢乐颂)
贝多芬的第九号交响曲,不仅是他的最后代表作,更是其独创性达最高潮,且淋漓尽致地歌颂出他对人类之爱、上帝之爱、自然宇宙之爱的经典巨作。本曲最为人熟悉的,当属以席勒的诗「欢乐颂」为结尾,成大型管弦乐四声独唱及合唱的第四乐章。乐章一开始,以奇异的嘈杂乐声为导奏,再进入低音弦乐的抒情旋律,而后再缓缓由混声四部合唱导入第九号交响曲的最高潮--「欢乐颂」大合唱部份。最后在速度与力度逐渐增强,高唱「百万兄弟们,相拥互抱吧...」热情地划下完美句点。谈及此曲值得一提的是,首演时由贝多芬担任指挥,并获得满堂如雷掌声,但已是全聋的贝多芬却默默地背对听众,丝毫未曾感受到人们给他的喝采,最后还是由女低音歌手的暗示才面向观众致谢,这段故事至今仍令人有说不出的动容。然而在音乐史上,将合唱溶入交响乐中的作法,却是空前的,器乐与声乐交融于一体,显得如此雄浑庄严,与充满生气。虽然后来也有不少人尝试如此的曲式,但都不及贝多芬来得精采。
