While I can see in retrospect, a lot of the references to other bands I think the process of influence in 'rock music' since about 1979 has involved a lot more give and take.

U2's 'Achtung Baby'for example is a 'spot The Sound riff-marathon'for those who knew The Sound's work. 'Where The Love Is/Real Thing', 'Kinetic/Ultra Violet', 'Deep Deep Blue' (Alexandria solo track)/'Ride Your Wild Horses', etc. I think it's fair to say that most of the roll call of'Big Music' bands listened to each other and so styles evolved consciously and sub-consciously together
