黑金属这种音乐流派，以邪恶、异教崇拜以及撒旦思想为其主要诉求，通常在歌词含有反基督、反宗教的倾向即被归为黑金属。主唱运用尖叫式的黑腔，强烈失真的吉他，猛烈却阴沉的双大鼓，快速行进的节奏和旋律，除了传统重金属固定乐器之外，经常会使用其他乐器如钢琴、小提琴，或歌剧的女高音，在歌曲中营造出一股诡异又吓人的恐怖气氛，以及带来冷冽，黑暗，带有绝望的感受。
自杀黑金属又名抑郁黑金属，是黑暗金属音乐的一种分支风格。音乐其实并不是以自杀为主体，只不过音乐内容充满着忧郁悲凉，节奏紧凑粗糙刺耳令人感到窒息。自杀黑金属又称抑郁/厌世黑金属，是一种以冰冷、刺耳旋律为主要表现方式比传统黑金属更加极端的黑金属音乐。
黑金属从未成为音乐市场的主流。这是适合在暗夜释放内心抑郁和那些使人窒息的黑暗感的音乐。
