灵魂乐，1950年代发源自美国，它结合了黑人福音音乐（Gospel Music）、节奏蓝调（R&B）和爵士（Jazz）等音乐流派。灵魂乐通过节奏蓝调的加入让传统福音音乐其更加世俗化。它有鲜明的节奏、拍掌、即兴肢体动作。此外，独唱与伴唱之间的对唱、紧绷的发声技巧I也是其主要特色。
放克 是一种美国的音乐类型，起源于1960年代中期至晚期，非裔美国人音乐家将灵魂乐、灵魂爵士乐和节奏蓝调融合成一种有节奏的、适合跳舞的音乐新形式。放克“不再强调旋律与和声，而强调电贝斯与鼓的强烈节奏律动”。放克歌曲通常建立在单一和弦上的衍伸性即席伴奏，不同于节奏蓝调和灵魂乐围绕在和弦进行。
节奏布鲁斯，又称节奏怨曲。是一种首先非裔美国人艺术家所演奏，并融合了爵士乐、福音音乐和布鲁斯音乐的音乐形式。在 1960年代，节奏布鲁斯被用于总括灵魂乐和放克音乐的术语。而现在R&B的缩写差不多一直被用于代替全写“节奏布鲁斯”，而主流则用它来表示由迪斯科逐步变得不那么流行而发展出来的Contemporary R&B──一种现代灵魂乐和受放克音乐影响的流行音乐。
爵士乐是一种起源于非洲形成于美国的音乐形式。在它之前是一些更早出现的美国黑人音乐（如蓝调、福音歌曲等），而这些音乐是美国黑人根植于其非洲音乐传统的基础上，结合他们在现实中的遭遇创作出来的。早期蓝调主要表现黑人的悲惨境遇和底层生活状态（蓝调的英文原字Blue除了指‘蓝色’之外亦有‘忧郁’之意），大多比较凄苦。福音歌曲主要是（向上帝）祈求平安，希望得到救赎。爵士乐在其发展过程中除了有黑人音乐的根源外，还吸收了如古典音乐、民族音乐等诸多音乐元素，逐渐形成了今天多门多类的爵士乐，所传递的内容也更为多样，不只是早期的“黑人风格”。
爵士乐的根源
爵士乐源于蓝调，是一种从前居住在美国南部的非洲奴隶以及他们的后代们的民间音乐。蓝调深受西非文化和音乐传统的影响，这些奴隶也逐渐成为移居到城市的黑人的音乐家。
