It was an especially unlikely move for three middle-class white kids from New York City, but it was a sonic shift that created a stir. Leading the charge was "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" from 1986's Licensed To Ill. Produced by friend and label head Rick Rubin, the song combined heavy metal swagger, rap brio and the Beastie Boys' ill-bred humor. 二 :《Brass Monkey》 Whereas the boisterous Gen X anthem "Fight For Your Right" sonically shared much in common with the Beastie Boys' hardcore roots, "Brass Monkey" – also from Licensed To Ill – delivered a more hip-hop flavored two-and-a-half minute nugget of infectious tomfoolery. Built around a sample of obscure R&B outfit Wild Sugar's "Bring It Here," "Brass Monkey" was a riotous ode to the trio's primary interests at the time: "Monkey and parties and reelin' and rockin'" The Beastie Boys' party friendly tracks – and complementary music videos – helped make Licensed To Ill a pop-culture phenomenon, topping Billboard’s album chart for seven weeks and selling more than nine million copies. 三 :《Hey Ladies》 Appearing on 1989's landmark Paul's Boutique, which was recorded with producer/collaborators the Dust Brothers, "Hey Ladies" combined the feckless sing-along hedonism of earlier Beastie Boys anthems with a technical sophistication (especially in its complex, multi-layered sampling) that would profoundly influence the sound and construction of hip-hop. The song's lyrical gymnastics – referencing Tom Thumb, Chuck Woolery, Vincent van Gogh and Welcome Back, Kotter, among many others – set the bar for rap's verbal acrobats for generations."Hey Ladies" was the only charting single from Paul's Boutique. 四 :《Shake Your Rump》 Paul's Boutique was a dizzying, kaleidoscopic collage that has been called “the Pet Sounds and Dark Side of the Moon of hip-hop," featuring as many as 300 audio samples spread out over its 15 tracks. "Shake Your Rump" brilliantly captured the spirit of that creativity and singular vision, weaving snippets by everyone from Average White Band, Afrika Bambaataa and James Brown to Funky 4+1, Ronnie Laws and Led Zeppelin, to Rose Royce and Sugarhill Gang. Above it all were the vocal stylings of ADROCK, MCA and Mike D, who echoed the song's sonic broad strokes with playful lyrics that referenced Patty Duke and Kangols (The Patty Duke the wrench and then I bust the tango / Got more rhymes than Jamaica got Mango Kangols), cartoon character Fred Flintsone and The Brady Bunch (Like Sam the butcher bringing Alice the meat / Like Fred Flintstone driving around with bald feet), among many, many other things. It was the type of dense masterpiece that would go on to inspire the likes of modern mashup purveyors, such as Girl Talk. 五 : 《So What'Cha Want》 Released as the second single from 1992's Check your Head, "So What'Cha Want" was emblematic of a revised sonic approach by the Beastie Boys. Although the trio still invoked a hip-hop vision dominated by a colorful musical stew whose recipe included elements of punk, jazz and funk, the sample-heavy direction of Paul's Boutique was scaled back in favor of live instruments and complementary arrangements, with each member of the Beastie Boys playing on the album – namely ADROCK on guitar, MCA on bass, Mike D on drums and, on this track, the killer organ hook played by Money Mark. "So What'cha Want" stands out as among the album's few moments that slips into a more rap-inspired groove, with it record scratches and a bass-heavy syncopated rhythm, though embodies the lyrically driven structure found throughout the album, as the trio takes turns behind the mic delivering vaguely confrontational lyrics through a scratchy filter: But like a dream I'm flowing without no stopping / Sweeter than a cherry pie with ready whip topping / Goin' from mic to mic kickin' it wall to wall / Well I'll be calling out you people like a casting call. 六 :《Sabotage》 Released in 1994, Ill Communication brought the Beastie Boys their largest audience since their 1986 debut. The album peaked at Number One on the Billboard 200 charts in June 1994, and debuted at Number Two on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums that same month. The album's chart success was propelled largely by its first single, "Sabotage." Signaling a return to a more traditional rock arrangement, the Beastie Boys channeled their punk roots for a raucous number powered by MCA's distorted bass riff, along with Mike D on drums and ADROCK on guitar. The Spike Jonze–directed music video gained extensive MTV airplay, casting the fun-loving threesome as central characters in a Seventies crime drama parody. 七 :《Sure Shot》 The lead track on Ill Communication, "Sure Shot" was the type of unique turn that the Beastie Boys seem to effortlessly curate. The song is driven by a flute riff pulled from jazz artist Jeremy Steig's "Howlin' For Judy," which provides an unlikely yet ideal foil for the punch and kick of the track's hip-hop cadence and hardcore beat. An evolution of the era's jazz rap sound, the verse-chorus-verse structure of "Sure Shot" meant it would find release as a single, and its chorus remains one of the more often-quoted passages from the Beastie Boys voluminous canon: Because you can't, you won't, and you don't stop / When you can't, you won't, and you don't stop / You know you can't, you won't, and you don't stop. 八 :《Intergalactic》 Echoing the title's outer-dimensional suggestion, the lead single from the Beastie Boys' fifth album, Hello Nasty, is chock full of celestial atmospherics – including a host of synth blips and beeps, and a recurring robotic vocoder voice – that gel with the steady, head-bouncing beat of "Intergalactic." Lyrically, the group deliver a twisted assemblage of metaphors and similes to address their hip-hop panache and ability to rev up a crowd: From the family tree of old school hip hop / Kick off your shoes and relax your socks / The rhymes will spread just like a pox / Cause the music is live like an electric shock. The confidence was not unfounded: "Intergalactic" peaked at Number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1999. The music video directed by MCA (under the pseudonym of Nathanial Hornblower) was an uproarious homage to classic Japanese monster movies, and featured the popular single-only mix of the song. 九 :《Body Movin》 Appearing on 1998's Hello Nasty, "Body Movin'" was the follow-up single to "Intergalactic." The song notably sampled Amral's Trinidad Cavaliers Steel Orchestra's version of the Tito Puente composition "Oye Como Va" (later made famous by Santana), giving the song its distinct Latin flair, in addition to vocal tracks from a fitness clip. The cross-cultural hodgepodge was buoyed by a funky backbeat, as the Beastie Boys' trademark interplay, call-and-response exchange moved the track forward with typically cogent gusto. 十 :《Make Some Noise》 After shelving work on The Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1 following Adam Yauch aka MCA's cancer diagnosis, the Beastie Boys regrouped and presented a reworked, edited playlist in 2011: The Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. Older, wiser and unaffectedly hip, the trio led off their eighth studio album with the pronounced dirty funk grind of "Make Some Noise." The track not only acknowledged their aging (My rhymes age like wine as I get older / I'm getting bolder, competition is waning) but also provided a humorous reflection – and show of maturity – on self-awareness: Pass me the scalpel, I'll make an incision / I'll cut off the part of your brain that does the bitching / Put it in formaldehyde and put it on the shelf / And you can show it to your friends and say that's my old self. The star-studded music video directed by MCA presents itself as a sequel to the group's first hit: "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!) |

Catch the Wind
♬入选名人堂的歌曲: Sunshine Superman,Wear Your Love Like Heaven,Hurdy Gurdy Man,Barabajagal (Love is Hot),Catch the Wind ♬名人堂推荐的Donovan十佳歌曲: 一 :《Catch The Wind》 Recorded in 1964 and released the following year in both the United States and United Kingdom, "Catch The Wind" was Donovan's debut single. Drawing comparisons to Bob Dylan – who influenced Donovan, though Donovan more closely identified with the likes of Woody Guthrie – the young troubador wrote the lovelorn ballad about Linda Lawrence (then the significant other of the Rolling Stones' Brian Jones) who later became Donovan's wife. The lyrical sentiment reflected a legitimate naivety, as an 18-year-old Donovan sang wistful lines including When sundown pales the sky / I wanna hide a while / Behind your smile / And everywhere I'd look, your eyes I'd find. That unaffected, unadorned innocence was echoed in a dulcet folk melody matched to Donovan's acoustic guitar chording and harmonica riffs. 二 :《Colours》 "Colours" was the follow-up single to "Catch The Wind," and later included on Donovan's second full-length, Fairytale, which was released in late 1965. The original recording (a different version with Donovan backed by a full band and produced by Mickie Most appeared on Epic's Donovan's Greatest Hits in 1969) featured Brian Locking of the Shadows on bass and took a similar tack to Donovan's first single, with lilting, acoustic-driven folk alongside the songwriter's poetic, romanticised reflections on the various shades that color his life. 三 :《Sunshine Superman》 After a series of folk releases, "Sunshine Superman" – the title track of Donovan's third studio album – found Donovan plugging in and tuning out the detractors that had dismissed him as a Dylan wannabe. Released in 1966, the song blended elements of blues, classical, folk, jazz and rock and seamlessly married it all to an infectious melody that helped make Donovan among the biggest recording artists of the mid 60s, as "Sunshine Superman" peaked at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 in America and Number Two on the British charts. The arrangement led with a jazzy bass groove, dotted with flashes of harpsichord, as Donovan's more familiar folk strum got a boost from guitarist Jimmy Page (of Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin fame), who supplied inventive blues licks throughout. 四 :《Season Of The Witch》 Centered around two chords, 1966's "Season Of The Witch" took the psych-folk direction of "Sunshine Superman" to new heights. Whereas "Sunshine"'s narrative centered on grand romantic ambition (Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me / I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah!), "Season Of The Witch" invoked a mind-altering paranoia in lyrics such as: When I look over my shoulder / What do you think I see? / Some other cat / Looking over his shoulder at me / And he's strange, sure he's strange. Donovan departed from his usually lulling vocal cadence, instead varying between an almost spoken-word delivery to projecting in a gruff yell during the song's chorus. The trippy essence was spread over five coiling minutes. 五 :《Mellow Yellow》 Peaking at Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1966, "Mellow Yellow" – the title track of Donovan's fourth studio album – was a momentous follow-up to the success of "Sunshine Superman." Released at the dawn of the psychedelic revolution, the track's nonsensical, esoteric musings rode on a smooth jazz rhythm with minimal guitar voicings before a snare drum fill introduced a whirling interlude complete with horns, hollers and hand claps. 六 :《Wear Your Love Like Heaven》 Donovan's ambitious 1967 studio effort was released as a double LP entitled A Gift From A Flower to a Garden in the UK, while its US release was divided between two records: Wear Your Love Like Heaven and For Little Ones. The warm atmospherics of the former – as well as the more bubbly, kid friendly aesthetic of the latter – were the result of Donovan's own production hand. The lyrics of "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" tread familiar ground – love, colors, nature, positivity – that combined with the upbeat, varied instrumentation evocatively capture the sentimental spirit of the era. 七 :《Hurdy Gurdy Man》 Released in the United States in 1968, the title track of Donovan's sixth studio album bore a heavier sound than earlier material. Arranged by John Paul Jones, with percussion credited to John Bonham, and guitar work provided by Jimmy Page and Allan Holdsworth, the song's more muscular leanings felt natural. Donovan's trembling intonation drifted over a series of brooding rock passages that included washes of distorted guitar, declarative drum fills and sitar riffs. The song peaked at Number Five on the Billboard Hot 100. 八 :《Barabajagal(love is hot)》 Although the meaning of the title track to Donovan's 1969 album is debatable, its enunciation had an innate rhythmic quality that proved the guiding vibe for a recording featuring the Jeff Beck Group. With Donovan captaining the jam, and virtuoso guitarist Beck and his explosive rhythm section backing him, the song emerged as a fiery funk-groove that had yet to appear in Donovan's oeuvre to that point. 九 :《Lord Of The Dance》 Lord Of The Dance" appeared on Donovan's second double-album, HMS Donovan, a UK-only release in the summer of 1971. The prolific folk minstrel had returned to the studio following Barabajagal to record an album of children's songs, not unlike he had done with the aptly titled For Little Ones in 1967. "Lord Of The Dance" was an adaptation of the American Shaker song "Simple Gifts" by English musician Sydney Carter. Donovan's cover version had a markedly upbeat timbre, spirited along with the songwriter's prodigious finger picking – a style he had borrowed from the likes of another Stateside influence: the Carter Family. 十 :《Poorman's Sunshine》 Although "Poorman's Sunshine" originated during the recording of Barabajagal, it was given new life on Donovan's 2004 album Beat Cafe. True to the implication of an album named Beat Cafe, "Poorman's Sunshine" opened with a fluid upright bass riff and cymbal splashes as Donovan cooly sang "I'm out of the darkness and into the light," evoking the darkened environs of a jazz nightclub. Adding speedy drumstick-brush fills and dashes of lively organ to the mix alongside Donovan's rhythmic vamping completed the effect and gave the song a steely swing. |

Welcome to the Jungle
♬入选名人堂的歌曲: Welcome to the Jungle,Sweet Child O' Mine,Patience,November Rain,Paradise City ♬名人堂推荐的Guns N' Roses十佳歌曲: 一 :《Welcome To The Jungle》 "Welcome To The Jungle" was the opening volley of an assault on the rock and roll mainstream of the Eighties. The first track on 1987's Appetite for Destruction, "Welcome To The Jungle" was the antithesis of the pop-metal that was heavily favored by rock radio of the era. Rose's lyrics painted a portrait of Los Angeles far removed from the glitz and glamour more commonly seen and heard, instead singing of the town's dark, seedy side (Welcome to the jungle we take it day by day / If you want it you're gonna bleed but it's the price to pay / And you're a very sexy girl that's very hard to please / You can taste the bright lights but you won't get there for free). For Indiana native Rose, it was an honest account of his introduction to a cruel metropolis and the scenes he witnessed. His screeching vocals – including the bone-chilling opening to the song – reflected a despondency and anger, while the song's gritty, distorted verse riffs and declarative rhythm section gave the track a muscular backbone. The production was loud and brash – just like the band members themselves. 二 :《Sweet Child O'Mine》 This was the song that helped make the Gunners superstars, peaking at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988 and helping take sales of Appetite For Destruction to more than 18 million. If “Welcome to the Jungle” displayed their hard rock edge, then “Sweet Child O’ Mine” showed more emotional range, but without dipping into the metal power ballad territory mined by so many of their contemporaries. The song also established lead guitarist Slash as a bona fide guitar hero. With his signature top hat, wild shock of hair and low-slung Gibson Les Paul, Slash struck a singular presence and had the memorable chops to match. The intro to "Sweet Child O'Mine" ranks among rock's great guitar riffs while the main guitar solo translated the mid-tempo rock song's romantic sentiment into a blistering passage with evocative blues licks and pentatonic runs, and wah-wah effects. 三 :《Paradise City》 Although the late 80s may be considered a golden era of hard rock in terms of commercial airplay, "Paradise City" was still an unlikely radio hit. The song presented a tale of urban grit (Just an urchin livin' under the street / I'm a hard case that's tough to beat / I'm your charity case, so buy me somethin' to eat) and the superficial veneer of fame and fortune (Take me down to the paradise city / Where the grass is green / And the girls are pretty). The opening vocal parts showcased not only Rose’s vocal ability but also his ear for beautiful interlocking pop harmonies. Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, the song's composition and the band's adroit playing gave it a vitality that kept it from seeming overblown, from its chugging verse groove to the anthemic chorus to the double-time coda that closed the track at a frenetic pace. "Paradise City" was the third single from the band's 1987 debut to chart in the Top 10. 四 :《Patience》 An all-acoustic ballad, "Patience" showed a more vulnerable Guns N' Roses. Whereas Rose projected an almost feral howl throughout most of the songs featured on Appetite For Destruction, he showcased a more subdued croon on "Patience," which appeared on 1988's G N' R Lies, whistling and tenderly emoting, while Slash and the band delivered a melodic soundtrack with tasteful solo work. Still, the song's climactic coda featured Rose delving into his familiar snarl, though as a juxtaposition to his timbre leading up to that moment, it had a profound effect on the mood of the song. Stylistically, "Patience" was a departure from their (ostensible) comfort zone, and provided an early teaser for the more ambitious material that would appear a few years later. 五 :《Used to love her》 Although the meaning of this honky tonk shuffle from G N' R Lies is open to debate – Slash once claimed it was about Rose's dog – it ranks among the band's more lighthearted moments, a sentiment echoed in Rose's call to action during the song: "Take it for what it is." With its chorus – I used to love her, but I had to kill her / I knew I'd miss her, so I had to keep her / She's buried right in my back yard – it was a moment of humorous, deliberate ambiguity for a band who would engender its fair share of controversy (including the racist claims brought about by lyrics to Lies' "One In A Million"). The light mood is echoed in the breezy strum of acoustic guitars and Slash's dextrous handling of countrified leads that showcased his versatility as a guitarist. 六 :《You Could Be Mine》 "You Could Be Mine" was first rehearsed by the band in the late 80s (the song's lyrics "With your bitch slap rappin' and your cocaine tongue you get nothin' done" appeared in the liner notes of Appetite For Destruction). Released in June 1991, a driving drum fill, menacing bass line and controlled feedback opened "You Could Be Mine," and gave fans the first taste of material that would be featured on the sprawling, 30-song double release Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, which arrived that fall. Although the production was more slick than earlier efforts, "You Could Be Mine" still delivered a liberal dose of Rose's angered, impassioned holler (I'm a cold heartbreaker / Fit to burn / And I'll rip your heart in two / And I'll leave you lyin' on the bed) with a complementarily charged-up hard rock soundtrack. "You Could Be Mine" was featured in James Cameron's 1991 summer blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and the video for the song featured the movie's star cyborg: Arnold Schwarzenegger. 七 :《November Rain》 Everything about "November Rain," one of the last singles to appear from the Illusion set, was grandiose. With its heavily orchestrated opening featuring an array of strings and piano that gradually gave way to a more rock-oriented wall of guitars and drums, the nine-minute track – and the suitably epic music video that followed – solidified the band as a group of musicians capable of lavish arena-rock level productions both on and off the stage. Still, the song was grounded by Rose’s keen sense of melody and Slash’s soaring guitar solos. In songs like this, Guns N' Roses seemed to be following in the footsteps of bands like Led Zeppelin and Queen who recorded multi-part rock journeys on later albums. The band performed the song at the 1992 MTV Music Awards and were joined on stage by Elton John, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Rose in 1994. 八 :《Civil War》 "Civil War" launched Use Your Illusion II with a sweeping narrative on war that had Rose questioning "what's so civil about war anyways?" The song included a number of audio samples – including Strother Martin's speech to a group of chain gang prisoners in Cool Hand Luke – adding to the song's expansive dramatics. Musically, the song reportedly grew from an instrumental developed by Slash, and with the addition of the band's input and Rose's lyrics, evolved into an eight-minute arrangement. The song's intro and verses revolved around a simple minor-chord riff on the guitar and piano as the backdrop for more delicate passages before exploding in the bombastic chorus and a series of wah-wah driven solos that culminated in a somber fade with Rose whistling "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." 九 :《Live And Let Die》 Originally recorded by Paul McCartney and Wings for the 1973 James Bond film Live and Let Die, "Live And Let Die" was the fourth single to appear from the Illusions set. The band had included covers on their albums before – Rose Tattoo's "Nice Boys" and Aerosmith's "Mama Kin" on Lies; Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" on Use Your Illusion II; and later released an album of mostly punk and glam rock covers entitled "The Spaghetti Incident?" in 1993 – but none so effectively fit the Guns N' Roses aesthetic the way "Live And Let Die" did. The band took McCartney's rock-reggae motifs and transformed them with a metallic rock resonance that gave the lyrics (When you got a job to do / You gotta do it well / You gotta give the other fellow hell) a summarily nastier tone than the original. 十 :《Better》 Guns N' Roses began writing material for a new album in 1994, started recording music in 1996, underwent numerous line-up and production changes, reportedly finished a new album in 2006 and released Chinese Democracy in 2008. “Better” took Rose's gift for melody and combined it with his ability to push his voice into different spaces, such as the falsetto of the song's opening lines and pre-chorus, the gritty growl of the verse and the vocal shouting of the chorus. The music on the track rocked hard with an industrial edge, featuring a tight drum and bass rhythm section that allowed the various guitar riffs to sink deep into the groove, while the guitar solo (played by Buckethead) mixed old school hard rock distortion with digital chop and glitch. |

Wedding Bell Blues
♬入选名人堂的歌曲: Stoned Soul Picnic,Stoney End,Wedding Bell Blues,And When I Die,It's Gonna Take a Miracle ♬名人堂推荐的Laura Nyro十佳歌曲: 一 :《Wedding Bell Blues》 After a yearlong residency of sorts at the Hungry i coffeehouse in San Francisco, one radio station characterized Nyro's music as part of the "San Francisco sound." Recorded in 1966, her studio album debut, More Than a New Discovery, proved that assertion to be inaccurate, as Nyro invoked myriad sounds of her childhood – to wit, her jazz and soul/R&B leanings – to craft songs far more mature than her teenage years would suggest. Inspired by the doo-wop crooning of songs like Nolan Strong and the Diablos "The Wind," Nyro delivered a moving piece on hopeful love and frustration with a potential husband: I was the one came runnin' when you were lonely / I haven't lived one day not loving you only / But kisses and love won't carry me / Till you marry me Bill. The 5th Dimension had a hit in 1969 with their cover of "Wedding Bell Blues," taking the song to Number One on the Billboard Hot 100. 二 :《Stoney End》 Written by Nyro when she was a teenager, "Stoney End" was a deceptively simple folk-pop cut that illustrated Nyro's gift for complex vocal harmonies and melody. The song, initially released on More Than a New Discovery by the Folkways imprint, featured Nyro's nuanced piano playing and lush production as the backdrop to a hard-worn, homespun narrative: I was born from love and my poor Mother worked the mines / I was raised on the good book Jesus / Till I read between the lines / Now I don't believe I wanna see the morning. A precocious Nyro had developed a fondness for poetry, which imbued much of her work with a literary quality that belied her age. Barbra Streisand named her 1971 studio album after "Stoney End," which included a cover of the title track that peaked at Number Six on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. 三 :《And When I Die》 With lyrics that included the lines When dyin' time is here / Just bundle up my coffin 'cause it's cold way down there … And when I die and when I'm gone / There'll be one child born and a world to carry on, one wouldn't guess the source to be a teenage Nyro, whose gospel-inspired, deeply soulful vocals opened the track before shifting into a rollicking country-tinged number. The song was first recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, to whom Nyro sold the song; Blood, Sweet and Tears would take the track to Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. 四 :《Eli's Comin》 After gaining the attention of David Geffen, Nyro moved to Columbia records where her first release was Eli and the Thirteenth Confession in 1968. Jon Landau noted that the album was "The work of a brilliant, young talent" in Rolling Stone, and "Eli's Comin'" captured that brilliance in a four-minute, moody piece that showcased Nyro's eclectic aural palette, from the haunting, minor-key intro to the upbeat shuffle of the verse and chorus to the soul-infused coda. Three Dog Night covered the song on their 1969 studio album, Suitable For Framing. 五 :《Stoned Soul Picnic》 Included on Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, a fittingly breezy groove punctuated with splashes of brass, funky guitar riffs and bass pops dominates "Stoned Soul Picnic," as Nyro's complementarily easy-going vocals recommend time to Surry down to a stoned soul picnic / There'll be lots of time and wine / Red-yellow honey, sassafras and moonshine. The low-key idealism found new life with another Nyro cover by the 5th Dimension, who charted at Number Three on the Billboard Hot 100 with their version in the summer of 1968. 六 :《Save The Country》 Another song from the Nyro catalog that was recorded by the 5th Dimension (included on their 1970 album, Portrait), "Save The Country" was also featured on Nyro's New York Tendaberry album, released in 1969. Nyro once explained that she wasn't pleased with the song when she first wrote it, only when she began singing it in a lower register did it resonate with her. With its expressive gospel flourishes – including the uplifting coda – Nyro crafted a stunning American spiritual that in many ways reflected her reverence for Billie Holiday, who Nyro called "the great mother-musician-teacher of the art of phrasing." 七 :《Mercy on Broadway》 As the title suggests, "Mercy on Broadway" found Nyro gravitating toward her love of the stage, crafting a two-minute micro-suite with a distinct theatrical quality. The track opens with Nyro on the piano then evolves with chorus-laden passages, horns, sound effects and hand claps in an idiosyncratic motif that included the songwriter's assertion: On Broadway, jive and pray / There ain't no mercy now on Broadway. 八 :《New York Tendaberry》 Nyro described the title track of her third studio album as having emerged during a "very wild time of exploration" to Paul Zollo in an interview with SongTalk, the quarterly publication of the National Academy of Songwriters. Accordingly, "New York Tendaberry" was a deeply emotive arrangement, with moments of absolute silence braced against a piano as the sole accompaniment to Nyro's soothing vocal harmonies that carried a lyrical portrait of city life: Sweet kids in hunger slums / Firecrackers break / And they cross / And they dust / And they skate / And the night comes. 九 :《It's Gonna Take a Miracle》 A pop song penned by the songwriting duo of Teddy Randazzo and Bob Weinsten, along with Lou Stallman, and a 1965 R&B hit for the Royalettes, "It's Gonna Take a Miracle" was a highlight of Nyro's 1971 release, Gonna Take a Miracle. The album of soul and R&B covers pulled from Nyro's formative years in the New York City and was produced by the dynamic production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. With backing vocals by trio Labelle, "It's Gonna Take a Miracle" demonstrated the expressive power of Nyro's voice and her skillful, sympathetic handling of the material that had so inspired her. 十 :《Midnite Blue》 After a five year break following the release of Gonna Take a Miracle, Nyro returned in 1976 with Smile. On "Midnite Blue," Nyro used a smokey, jazzy groove as the centerpiece of an arrangement where her vocals were simultaneoulsy tender and forceful. Lyrically, "Midnite Blue" offered some of Nyro's most vivid imagery: There's smoke in the kitchen, shrimps curled / The sun on black velvet and high stars / At the bottom of the world / Smile all you want / But you know that I'm fine in the warm hands of midnite blue. |

♬入选名人堂的歌曲: True Men Don't Kill coyotes,Give it Away,Under the Bridge,By the Way,Scar Tissue ♬名人堂推荐的Red Hot Chili Peppers十佳歌曲: 一 :《True Men Don't Kill Coyotes》 The lead track on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' self-titled 1984 debut, produced by Gang of Four's Andrew Gill, "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" exemplified the quirky, funk-rock sound the boys from Southern California had been cultivating. Anthony Kiedis' esoteric lyrics about gallivanting through Hollywood "on a paisley dragon" and the map for a strange trip – Well, I'm gonna ride a sabertooth horse / Through the Hollywood hills / The farther west, the farther out – were delivered in a jumpy, rap-inspired cadence that meshed perfectly with the slap bass funk of Flea, and the percussive flair of Cliff Martinez and jagged guitar parts of Jack Sherman – the latter two's only appearance on a RHCP album. The song was also the foundation for the group's first music video. 二 :《Catholic School Girls Rule》 From its controversial title and subject matter (The good book says we must suppress / The good book says we must confess / But who cares what the good book says / Cause now she's taking off her dress) to its fast tempo, "Catholic School Girls Rule" embraced the punk sound more closely associated with the Red Hot Chili Peppers' California peers, such as Black Flag and Dead Kennedys, though delivered under a blanket of undeniable funk. The latter element came with the input of producer George Clinton, the maestro of P-funk, who brought a loose, free jam feel to much of 1985's Freaky Styley. It would be the only album he'd work with the Chili Peppers on as producer. 三 :《Fight Like A Brave》 "Fight Like A Brave" launched 1987's Uplift Mofo Party Plan with an explosive funk-metal-rap hybrid and was the song that really introduced the band to college radio listeners across the country. Hillel Slovak, who'd masterfully tuned in to a funk groove on Freaky Styley's jams, dialed up the distortion adding metal riffs to the mix. Kiedis' rap vocals kicked in and out amid the steady churn of bassist Flea and drummer Jack Irons. Despite the metallic overtones, "Fight Like A Brave" had an imminently hummable, anthemic chorus. The lyrics and title were a reference to Kiedis' battle with heroin addiction – a battle bandmate Slovak would succumb to less than a year later, overdosing on the drug. 四 :《Taste The Pain》 Similar to AC/DC's triumphant comeback Back In Black following the death of lead singer Bon Scott, the Chili Peppers' Mother's Milk, released in 1989, was a landmark recording in the band's career, made all the more impressive given the addition of new drummer Chad Smith after Irons quit, unable to cope with the loss of Slovak (though Smith did not appear on the actual recording), and guitarist John Frusciante. "Taste The Pain" helped prove not only that the band's core of Kiedis and Flea could still guide the group with a new ensemble, but also that the band were capable of bridging the gap between the all-out party atmospherics that were their hallmark and a more somber delivery. Flea's expressive, popping lead bass runs and trumpet solo figure prominently alongside Kiedis' unique delivery, which carried a previously unheard emotional sting. Meanwhile, Frusciante's effortless phrasing proved a capable replacement for the irreplaceable Slovak. 五:《Give It Away》 As the title suggests, the lyrics from the first single to be released off 1992's best-selling Blood Sugar Sex Magik finds Kiedis primarily espousing the virtues of altruism (Greedy little people in a sea of distress / Keep your more to receive your less / Unimpressed by material excess / Love is free, love me say, 'hell yes') and referencing people such as Bob Marley in a rapid-fire staccato diction that gave the song its most memorable aspect. Flea and Chad Smith supply the track's heady rhythmic brew of bass and drums, respectively, while Frusciante added the right amount of spunky solo work and funk-cum-hard rock riffs to register a distinct presence. The song's resonant textures found a stunning visual complement in a music video that gained extensive MTV airplay. 六 :《Under The Bridge》 Although largely cast as the cheerful court jesters, entertaining with an innovative melding of funk and rock, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' experiences with addiction and loss meant its members – particularly vocalist Kiedis – had plenty of demons to exorcise. With its stripped, down-tempo feel, a lyrical guitar intro and Kiedis' sensitive, autobiographical account of darker days in Los Angeles, "Under The Bridge" was a poignant portrait that diverted from the Chili Peppers' typical sonic palette. Amid the rise of alternative rock – and the tragic losses the 90s era saw as a result of heroin addiction – "Under The Bridge" peaked at Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the summer of 1992 – the highest charting song of the band's career. 七 :《Scar Tissue》 The first single released off the band's 1999 Californication album produced by Rick Rubin, "Scar Tissue" featured Frusciante back on guitar after a brief hiatus during the Chili Peppers' recording of One Hot Minute with guitarist Dave Navarro. The song was indicative of the the more melody-driven, pop-oriented sound the band were affecting – a far cry from the loose funk jams of their earliest recordings. Rubin's comparatively barebones production, removing many of the effects of earlier album cuts, lent itself to the recording's low-key undulations, with Frusciante's steely solos providing powerful nuance. The song spent 16 weeks at Number One on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart. 八 :《Californication》 The title track to the Chili Peppers' 1999 release, this somber, minor key track illustrated Kiedis' greater depth as a songwriter, with a commentary on his home state's roll in marketing a homogenized, counterfeit culture (It's understood that Hollywood sells Californication) that spoke of plastic surgery (Pay your surgeon very well / To break the signs of aging), pornography (First born unicorn / hard core, soft porn), progress (Space may be the final frontier / But it's made in a Hollywood basement) and referenced Kurt Cobain and David Bowie (And Cobain can you hear the spheres / Singing songs off Station to Station). Although it presented a more mature side of the Chili Peppers' songwriting coin, musically, it was still a shiny, smooth groove that reflected the group's more familiar framework. 九 :《By The Way》 "By The Way," the title track of the Chili Peppers' eighth studio album, offered a return to the frenetic funk-rock bombast of previous efforts with the more melodious sensibilities of later works. The song opens with Frusciante strumming a simple New Wave-esque chord progression as Kiedis sings – not raps. After that, "By The Way" seamlessly weaves Flea's sizzling bass runs and Smith's tight drumming with Frusciante's scratchy, palm-muted guitar riffs and Kiedis sped-up narrative, dipping back and forth between such bursts and variations on the intro melody. The brilliant dynamic has made it a staple of live sets. 十 :《Snow (Hey Oh)》 Among the highlights of 2006's 28-song, Grammy Award–winning double-album Stadium Arcadium, "Snow (Hey Oh)" followed the more introspective lyricism (Come to decide that the things that I tried / Were in my life just to get high on / When I sit alone come get a little known / But I need more than myself this time), and softer, layered musical textures and tones of By The Way. Driven largely by Frusciante's speedily picked lead riff, the track's soaring chorus and outro passage have made it a fan favorite. |

Tin Soldier
♬入选名人堂的歌曲: Itchycoo Park,What'cha Gonna Do About it,All or Nothing,Tin Soldier ♬名人堂推荐的The Small Faces十佳歌曲: 一 :《What'cha Gonna Do About It》 At the heart of England's Mod music scene was a studious devotion and appreciation for American R&B and soul – a stylistic affect wholly embraced by the Small Faces in their earliest days. "What'cha Gonna Do About It" – the Small Faces' debut single – channeled Solomon Burke's "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love," and showcased singer/guitarist Steve Marriott's bluesy guitar lines and soulful vocal delivery. While the backing vocals of the chorus and bouncy bass and organ arrangement had a distinct pop sensibility, the song's instrumental interlude was fueled by squawking guitar that hinted at the more exploratory nature of the band's later recordings. The song would gain favor among punks in the 70s, when it was performed by the Sex Pistols and Cock Sparrer. 二 :《All Or Nothing》 Released as a single in 1966 and later appearing on 1967's From The Beginning, "All Or Nothing" would reach Number One on the UK singles charts – placing them in the same ranks as the Beatles, who were riding high on the strength of "Yellow Submarine." Written by Marriott and Lane, the song vacillated from the intro's winding guitar and gentle verses to explosive, infectious choruses and volume swells with McLagan's organ playing providing a sly undercurrent throughout. 三 :《Tin Soldier》 A bracing rock groove punctuated with McLagan's inspired lines on the keys and Kenney Jones' propulsive drums, "Tin Soldier" still highlighted the group's penchant for roots R&B dynamics. Marriott's hardened, blue-eyed soul vocals and plaintive wails (I just want some reaction / someone to give me satisfaction / all I want to do is stick with you /'cause I love you) mixed with a chorus of female backing vocals to great effect alongside punchy stops and starts. The song was among the group's biggest hits. Marriott would record a version of the song with his next band, Humble Pie, for their 1981 album Go For the Throat. 四 :《Itchycoo Park》 With its impossibly catchy lilt, "Itchycoo Park" was the song that brought the Small Faces their greatest American audience, as it reached Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. The song was included on the stateside release of their second album, which was re-named There Are But Four Small Faces, and was indicative of the psych-pop sound that the band were evolving. The adventurous production, to wit the song's spacey flange effect, echoed the trippy sentiment of the lyrics' overt drug references (What will we do there? / We'll get high / What will we touch there? / We'll touch the sky). 五 :《Lazy Sunday》 "Lazy Sunday" was a character-filled three-minute romp from the band's psych masterwork, Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake (1968). The song's evocative narration (à la Ray Davies) humorously documented the bothersome situation of feuding with neighbors, with Marriott speaking and singing in a cheekily pronounced Cockney accent in a song that was decidedly anglophilic and unconventionally catchy. Decades later, the song would inspire the title track of Blur's Parklife album in 1994 and was covered by the Libertines in the aughts. 六 :《Three Button Hand Me Down》 With Marriott in Humble Pie, Lane and the remaining Small Faces brought singer Rod Stewart and guitarist Ronnie Wood into the fold for the rechristened Faces' first album together, appropriately titled First Step. "Three Button Hand Me Down" closed out the album as a smokey six-minute blues number, with Lane's steady lead bass moving the track along, amid colorful organ flourishes from McLagan and Wood's laid-back riffing. Stewart's gravelly delivery was the perfect foil for the band's down and dirty blues-rock aesthetic, and the lyrics – extolling the virtues of keeping a suit handed down from the protagonist's father in Oklahoma – were indicative of the good-natured, good 'ol boys persona that became a hallmark of the band. 七 :《Had Me A Real Good Time》 Known for their rabble-rousing, hard-living ways and sometimes shambolic performances, "Had Me A Real Good Time," from 1971's Long Player, captured the raucous spirit of the Faces, as Stewart sings of a wild party atmosphere (Dancing madly round the room / singing loudly and sorta out of tune / was escorted by a friendly slag / 'round the bedroom and back) he's happy to have been part of – and equally grateful to find his way home from (On my way home, I happened to fall off my bicycle – good party / I was glad to come / But I was glad to get home). The backdrop is a complementarily spirited rave-up with undeniable swagger. 八 :《Stay With Me》 From 1972's A Nod is as Good as a Wink... to a Blind Horse, "Stay With Me" erupts in an uptempo intro that gives way to a steady groove marked by McLagan's distorted electric piano part, Wood's powerful slide guitar playing, Jones' deliberate drumming and Lane's typically deft bass lines. The dirty tone of the group's chief players and Stewart's well-worn vocals give a debauched tale (Yeah, I'll pay your cab fare home / you can even use my best cologne / just don't be here in the morning when I wake up) the grit it needs to be compelling, wrapping it with a lively energy that's unadulterated entertainment. 九 :《Debris》 For all the Faces bravado, songs such as "Debris," written by Lane – who handled lead vocals on the track – illustrated that the band was deeper than the hardcore rock and roll lifestyle they projected. A slow burning, resonant number led by Lane's sentimental recollections (I heard your footsteps at the front door / and that old familiar love song / 'cause you knew you'd find me waiting there / at the top of the stairs) and Wood's emotive, bluesy guitar lead, "Debris" ranks among the more genuinely beautiful pieces in the Faces' oeuvre. 十 :《Ooh La La》 The title track and last song on the band's final album, "Ooh La La" again highlighted the Faces' softer, more reflective leanings. Sung by Wood and penned by Lane, the track scaled back the revved up rock and took a folk-inspired approach. The jangle was centered primarily around two chords, an indelible riff and a chorus made for singing along – a motif that would ultimately make Stewart a superstar. The simple arrangement proved a bright counterpoint to lyrics that had a slightly doleful if wiser perspective, characterized by wistful sentiment: I wish that I knew what I know now / When I was younger. |

Suspicious Minds
♬入选名人堂的歌曲: Suspicious Minds,Little Sister,Jailhouse Rock,Love Me Tender,Don't Be Cruel,That's All Right, Mama ♬名人堂推荐Elvis Presley的十佳歌曲: 一 :《That's All Right》 Released in the summer of 1954, "That's All Right" was Presley's first commercial single and a fairly faithful version of "That's All Right, Mama," the uptempo blues number originally recorded by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. The song was recorded "live" at Sam Phillips' Memphis Recording Service, with Presley on acoustic guitar and vocals, Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black on upright bass, and released on Phillips' Sun Records. This is arguably where the legend of Elvis Presley took root, his intensity driving the track and hinting at the Presleymania that was to come. 二 :《Mystery Train》 Presley's reworking of the song written by Sam Phillips and Junior Parker (and originally recorded by Junior's Blue Flames) was the b-side to 1955's "I Forgot To Remember To Forget." Like "That's All Right," the rollicking "Mystery Train" heralded the emergence of rockabilly, though Presley's trademark emoting carries a lament for his "baby's" departure that made for a memorable counterpoint to the arrangement. 三 :《Heartbreak Hotel》 By 1956, Presley had moved to RCA Victor, and his first release under the new label, "Heartbreak Hotel," would also be the first of many recordings to top Billboard's Top 100 chart. Although on RCA, producer Steve Sholes wanted to recapture the "Sun sound" and enlisted guitarist Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black, drummer DJ Fontana, guitarist Chet Atkins, pianist Floyd Kramer and three members of the Jordanaires on backing vocals for the sessions that produced "Heartbreak Hotel." Led by Presley's signature baritone, "Heartbreak Hotel" was deemed the Number One single of the year by Billboard in 1956 – an unlikely feat for a song about a near-suicidal loner. 四 :《Don't Be Cruel》 With its swinging groove, harmonized backing vocals and Presley's famous hiccup, "Don't Be Cruel" became a sensation following its release in the summer of 1956. The recording of "Don't Be Cruel"/"Hound Dog" was Number One for 11 weeks – among the longest Number One runs in the rock era. Brooklyn songwriter Otis Blackwell (whose credits would later include "Return To Sender" and "All Shook Up," among others) composed the song, and Presley injected it with the vitality it needed to reach the top of the charts. 五 :《Jailhouse Rock》 The title track performance of Jailhouse Rock was the highlight of Presley's third film. The movie premiered on October 21, 1957, the same day the title track went to the top of the Billboard charts, where it remained for seven weeks. Penned by the team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (who also composed the enormously successful "Hound Dog," originally recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton), the song resonated beyond the U.S., becoming the first record ever to enter the British singles chart at Number One. Presley's charisma shined on the recording, and the song's two-chord riff is among rock's most indelible moments. 六 :《Viva Las Vegas》 Viva Las Vegas is considered one of Presley's best movies, if not the best. The title track of the 1964 film starring Presley as Lucky Jackson alongside Ann-Margret as Rusty Martin was a lively romp thats lyrical sentiment – I'm gonna keep on the run / I'm gonna have me some fun / If it costs me my very last dime / If I wind up broke up well / I'll always remember that I had a swingin' time – was perfectly echoed in the song's frenetic percussive charge and Presley's convincing, passionate delivery. 七 :《How Great Thou Art》 "How Great Thou Art" was the title track of Presley's second gospel LP, released in early 1967. It was recorded in Nashville, and won a Grammy that year for Best Sacred Performance. Presley was a superb gospel singer, and this song really captured his passion and vocal range. It was a staple of his live shows throughout the 1970s. 八 :《In The Ghetto》 The stirring "In The Ghetto" featured Presley's expressive, tender vocals as the vehicle for a narrative about a young boy's life of poverty in the inner-city. The song, written by Mac Davis, features suitably evocative instrumentation and became the springboard for Presley's comeback in 1969, peaking at Number Three during a 13-week run on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The 1969 American Sound Studio sessions in Memphis with producer Chips Moman found Presley artistically awakened. The resulting soul material formed From Elvis in Memphis, including the gospel-rooted highlight "In The Ghetto." 九 :《Suspicious Minds》 "Suspicious Minds" was one of the better tunes prepared (it was written by Mark James) for Presley's January 1969 recording dates at American Sound Studio in Memphis (the same sessions that produced "In The Ghetto"), the city that gave Presley his start in the previous decade. The song found Presley embracing a sound that owed more to soul and R&B than rock and country, as his bellowing voice powered the ballad. The effort was enlivened by backing vocals (Ronnie Milsap and Jeannie Greene) and a vibrant horn section. It would become Presley's first U.S. chart-topper since "Good Luck Charm" seven years earlier – and his 17th and final Number One hit, holding that position the week of November 1, 1969. 十 :《Burning Love》 The driving "Burning Love" was written by Dennis Linde, and among the final rock and roll numbers recorded by Presley. Released in 1972, it featured boogie piano, horn-laden chorus, choir-style vocals, pounding drums and fretwork by virtuoso guitarist James Burton. Presley's singing infuses the song with an edginess and the "hunka hunka burning love" coda closed the song on a punchy, gospel-inspired note. The song peaked at Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100 on the week of October 28, 1972.” |
