康塔塔（cantata）是一种包括独唱、重唱、合唱的声乐套曲，一般包含多个乐章，大都有管弦乐伴奏。康塔塔（Cantata）多乐章的大型声乐套曲。原意指声乐说唱的乐曲。后演变成包括独唱、重唱及合唱，由管弦乐队伴奏，各乐章具有一定的连贯性。1620年意大利作曲家A.格兰迪在其独唱用的《康塔塔与咏叹调》 康塔塔 中，首先运用此名称呼他所作的文艺复兴时期单音音乐一脉相承的独唱曲。17世纪40年代起，在格兰迪的基础上迅速形成了独唱康塔塔的体裁，成为由于朗诵调和返始咏叹调交替构成的4个乐章的叙事性世俗独唱套曲，由哈普西科德或再加一件弦乐器伴奏。后来这一体裁从抒情性的独唱曲逐渐演变为接近于小型室内歌剧或相当于歌剧中一场的规模，并从室内类型向合唱类型过渡。德国的J.S.巴赫的大量世俗康塔塔和教堂康塔塔，对康塔塔的发展具有重要意义。

Cantata一词在拉丁语中的原意的“歌唱，赞美” (由动词cantare名词化而成），英语等其他西方语言也大多原样使用这个词。cantata 与演奏 sonata (拉丁语“制造声音，使听见”) 相对，分别用来指音乐的两种形式，即声乐和器乐。

一首典型的康塔塔往往以序曲或者合唱开头，以合唱结尾，中间交错有伴奏的宣叙调，独唱或者重唱的咏叹调以及不同规模的合唱。可以看出，清唱套曲旧译作大合唱或是康塔塔不准确的，因为在清唱套曲中不只是合唱，独唱和重唱往往也有非常重要的地位，而音译为康塔塔对于如此常用的曲种亦不恰当。

宗教清唱套曲一般比叙事性的神剧（oratorio）规模小，内容偏重抒情或论述。世俗清唱套曲则包罗万象。

17世纪中叶，德国产生了德国式的宗教清唱套曲。这种清唱套曲一定程度上独立於意大利世俗和宗教清唱套曲的发展，在巴赫的时代达到了高峰。

德国的宗教清唱套曲发展的土壤是马丁·路德开创的众赞歌的音乐传统，众赞歌在其中起了基础和骨架的作用。布克斯特胡德，帕赫贝尔都作有这种类型的宗教康塔塔。

巴赫的早期宗教清唱套曲按照更早的传统称为「经文歌」或「协奏曲」，其中合唱和重唱占据主导地位，著名的代表有第4清唱套曲《耶稣躺在枯骨堆中》或译作《基督背负死亡枷锁》。可以听到巴赫使用了同名众赞歌作为骨架，每一句歌词作为一个乐章的主题，进行变奏。

巴赫创作成熟期的一百多首康塔塔展示了德国式宗教清唱套曲的几种典型结构，在这些结构中，清唱套曲的中段一般都是由包含对比主题的独唱咏叹调，宣叙调，重唱以及合唱构成的，主要的区别在于首位段落。大部分的清唱套曲首尾段落为圣经词句或是众赞歌作为歌词的合唱，这些合唱大多具有利托奈罗曲式，部分康塔塔结尾使用所有会众共同参与的众赞合唱，有一些康塔塔在开场合唱之前还有序曲。

巴赫的创作相比前人突出独唱的作用，他大量使用独唱的返始咏叹调，甚至创作了独唱清唱套曲，例如第82清唱套曲「我厌倦了」。众赞歌的作用同样重要。可以说，巴赫是清唱套曲创作的高峰，如今我们仍然演奏传唱的康塔塔主要是他的作品，尽管在他的时代，高产的泰勒曼，「就像别人写一封信一样」的创作了2000多首清唱套曲，但是那些如同流水账一般的作品大多已经被束之高阁，成为了音乐史学者们和猎奇的音乐爱好者的研究品，不再回响在人们的耳鼓里了。
