亨利•普赛尔(1659-1695),是一位巴洛克时期的英国作曲家,吸收法国与意大利音乐的特点,创作出独特的英国巴洛克音乐风格。代表作有歌剧《黛朵与挨涅阿斯》,半歌剧《仙后》、《亚瑟王》,戏剧配乐《摩尔人的复仇》等。

他被认为是英国最伟大的作曲家之一,独霸乐坛两百年,一直到20世纪初爱德华·埃尔加(Edward Elgar)成名之前,没有一个本土生长的英国作曲家达到他的成就。也因此,有人把那个时期的英国称为“古典音乐的荒漠”。

普赛尔音乐的特点

人们常常指出,普赛尔(原文译为珀赛尔)的音乐有许多外国的东西。这一点也不假,大量精美的舞蹈来自法国歌剧,宣叙调生动的心理刻画来自卡瓦利的古老的威尼斯歌剧。他的法国风格有时如此明显,竟然在自己的众多作品中插入几段吕利(Jean-Baptiste Lully,意大利出生的法国巴洛克作曲家——编注)的作品而没有人察觉。他的戏剧场景几乎都溯源于吕利,法国经文歌在他的赞美歌中留下了痕迹。他在三重奏鸣曲集(1683年)的序言中直说他对于英国音乐教育没有适当重视意大利音乐而感到遗憾,热切希望能表现意大利音乐的“严肃性和吸引力”。

但许多看法不提也罢,因为他终究是一个独具个性的英国音乐家。同他的工作相比,英国同行们创作的一切都显得苍白而不重要。他的旋律最有个性,旋律的表情只有在蒙特威尔第笔下才能找到。他奔放的想象力、自由而新颖独特的形式把每一个灵感——不论外表上多么法国或意大利——转化为他自己的创造。传统只有在不干扰他的艺术目的时才对他有意义。

一个青年音乐家正当创造力旺盛之年夭折,神圣的天才随之而逝。他热爱对位炫技和固定低音的结构,有了不起的剧场感和戏剧感,陶醉于尖锐的不协和音与大胆的和声转折,这些都是巴洛克的精神,因此他和蒙特威尔第及许茨一起,留给我们那一世纪的精华。他一死,不幸的时势和不列颠人的心态封锁了英国音乐戏剧的命运,英国本来或许能够缔造一种莎士比亚品位的音乐戏剧风格。
