灵魂爵士

放克爵士乐，也叫灵魂爵士，是一种源于50年代中期的爵士乐。它通常是由一些小型乐队所演奏，尤其是由一名高音（中音）萨克风手，或钢琴手，又或口琴手带领的三人乐队。

代表人物

Horace Silver 被许多人认为是放克音乐之父他形容放克 “是通俗的， 以布鲁斯为基础。它本身或许不算是蓝调，但感觉很像。玩放克与情调一点都沾不上;它只是一种玩法.... ” “灵魂乐基本上也只这, 但它在感觉和精神上增加了内心深处的 间，一种内在的东西。一个玩灵魂乐的乐手可以同时玩放克， 也可以不玩 。 ”

放克爵士是和酷爵士对立着产生的。那时酷爵士正当流行。前者有着后者所没有的一切：充满热情，大汗淋漓，而且从不离开它那布鲁斯的根源。比如，快节奏的放克作品旋律明快，层次分明，并伴以强劲的敲击乐舞曲节奏。 抒情的放克歌曲就更离不开布鲁斯了。总而言之，这是一种易于接受充满动感令人放松的音乐。 你们当中那些喜欢蓝调和节奏怨曲但又不是特别喜欢爵士乐的人都会爱上它。又或当你听多了爵士乐而有点发腻，放克是最好的选择。

代表作品

放克的经典唱恐怕得算Jimmy Smith与Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell合作的BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK(BLUE NOTE 46402)。当中有着好的放克音乐。不仅Jimmy和Turrenjtine的演奏是高水平的，吉他手 Kenny Burrell (另一位爵士布鲁斯大师)的参与也使得这张唱片成为爵士乐迷必藏品之一。Jimmy的长期鼓手，Donald Bailey 则令到这支四人乐队更加完美 。

另一张伟大的放克爵士乐的唱片要算是Kenny Burrell 的 MIDNIGHT BLUES (BLUE NOTE 84123)。十分好听！

放克乐手还包括有Gene Ammons, Charles Earland, Eddie Harris, Groove Holmes, Willis "Gator" Jackson, Les McCann, Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, Houston Person, Shirley Scott, Horace Silver, Johnny Hammond, Howard Roberts和Bobby Timmons。
