交响金属（Symphonic Metal） Symphonic Metal是近年来声势快速高涨的分支乐派，此新兴乐派又是以意大利乐团为首，Symphonic指的是交响式的编曲，通常是运用大量keyboard合成器的弦乐效果来营造出交响乐式的盛大华丽气氛，当然也有乐团会采用真实的弦乐器。金属乐与交响乐的结合，在欧洲古典音乐发展的历史背景下，自是一种自然的趋势。

哥特是70年代末到80年代中期的后朋克运动的一个分支。它形成于地下，表现了摇滚最黑暗和阴沉的一面。哥特乐队也以戏剧化的服装和它的追随者（称为Goths）而闻名。音质上，哥特采取了阴冷的合成器效果，加工了前朋克的吉他声音使它们建造一种不祥之兆、悲伤的感觉，通常是很壮观的音响背景。

一般来说哥特摇滚有如下特点：阴暗，颓废，冰冷，有恐怖的气氛，让人感到压抑和绝望，表现对死亡和黑色的向往，富有艺术气质。既含有精细的美感、又营造一种不协调的感觉。

哥特音乐中存在着复古的倾向，包括使用中世纪乐器，借鉴古典音乐，使用歌剧唱腔，歌词和取材都借鉴近代的哥特风格文学，等等。这既增强了哥特艺术的华丽美感，也进一步加深了其颓废空虚的程度。

很多哥特乐队（尤其是哥特金属乐队）使用了歌剧女高音的唱腔作为主唱或和声。但这并不是哥特音乐独有的特点，很多非哥特的音乐也会使用这样的唱腔。

哥特通常不是严格意义上受欢迎的风格，被给予了一种华丽诗意的倾向，无情悲哀的挽歌和无止境的戏剧化。然而，它产生了投入的，仍旧兴旺的亚文化，使它的美学概念在最初音乐全盛期过了很久后一直存在着。
