前文分类学 - 前卫摇滚、艺术摇滚、先锋实验摇滚（Progressive Rock, Art Rock、Avant-garde rock）- 名词释义 - Rock Chronicles 摇滚编年史 - 知乎专栏 讲述了这几个名词的区别和联系，现在开始讲前卫摇滚、艺术摇滚。前面说过，这两次的区分难度极高，我就混着用了，一般而言除非摇滚史上经常特意提到他们是艺术摇滚的，我们就一律说前卫摇滚了。

其实确切的讲，前卫摇滚的第一次运动，是和艺术摇滚密不可分的。而新前卫Neo-progressive rock，一般而言是舍弃了前卫摇滚中和艺术摇滚重合的那些先锋艺术、后现代艺术的成分，转为专注于和声结构、拍子变化等相对传统技术的追求，而且从情绪上普遍比较灰暗阴沉，音乐上普遍比较好听容易听。（我新前卫听得不是很多，只是泛泛了解过，有说错的地方望指正）

后世还有一种前卫摇滚，就是比较肤浅的直接结合交响乐、歌剧女声的那一系列路线，我个人称之为流行前卫摇滚。

下面我介绍下前卫摇滚/艺术摇滚运动的历史。总体而言，这是个英国为主、欧陆一定程度参与，没美国什么事情的运动。 但是，很多销量都是在美国完成的。这是个奇怪的现象，在美国卖的很好，本土乐队却还在自顾自玩先锋实验，没人响应前卫摇滚潮流。
