爵士钢琴有两种含义：一是指由爵士音乐演变而来的音乐体裁，用钢琴演奏，称爵士钢琴；二是爵士钢琴是一种特制演奏级钢琴，专供专业乐手演奏jazz音乐使用。特点是手感偏重，低音浑厚饱满。高音透亮，中音柔美过度自然，要求要有很强的立体声。为专业录音棚使用较多，

爵士钢琴的起源
爵士钢琴源自一种叫"拉格泰姆"的钢琴音乐，"拉格泰姆"是Ragtime的音译，词意是"参差不齐的拍子".故又称为"散拍乐"，它是从非洲民间音乐发展而成的，它以丰富的切分和自由的即兴为其赢得全世界流行乐迷和钢琴演奏家的青睐。特别是爵士乐也属于流行乐，由于其风格独特，变化丰富，因此能够巧妙加入爵士乐因素的流行乐作品往往可以与众不同，脱颖而出。
演奏特点
爵士钢琴的演奏特点大致上可以分为四种：
第一种是"大跨度"奏法，即演奏时左手采用连续的大跳进行，形成个性鲜明的"大跨度低音"（Stride Bass），这种奏法在拉格泰姆以及早期爵士乐中经常出现。
第二种是"布吉－乌吉"（Boogie Woogie）奏法，它是一种快速的布鲁斯钢琴风格，对爵士钢琴有着很大的影响。"布吉－乌吉"经常采用"滚奏" ，英文叫做 Crushing 来体现它的特征。另外，它还经常以左手持续弹奏固定低音来衬托右手复杂的旋律。"布吉－乌吉"的低音音型主要有"行进"（Walking）的八度低音分解和“双音”反复两种形式。例：“行进”的八度低音分解 5 5 b3 2 | 1 1 b7 5 | 、“双音”反复。
第三种是“博普”奏法，它的特点是节奏支离破碎，旋律很不连贯，有时右手不时的连续奏出一连串单音音符，由于它根据比博普爵士发展而来，因此而得名。
另外一种爵士钢琴其实称不上演奏方法，但是在速度较慢的爵士乐中（如冷爵士）经常出现而独成一派。它的特点是采用完整或相对完整的和弦在二分或更长时值的基础上不时的加入一些切分，以此体现出慢爵士的松弛感。
爵士钢琴演奏关键在于即兴技巧和风格的把握，对于受过良好传统钢琴演奏训练的人来来说，不经过专门学习并不一定能弹好一首爵士钢琴风或是一首"拉格泰姆"钢琴曲，爵士钢琴即兴演奏需要一定的理论和大量的实践积累作基础。
名家名曲
现代爵士钢琴名家有哈比·帕克斯、安德鲁·希尔，梅尔道，Jeff Lorber杰夫·罗伯及Joe Sample等，《Misty》，Erroll Garner 最有名的曲子，不知道已经被多少人演奏过。Garner的独特之处是－－他没有学过读谱，所以他的艺术风格极其独特－－基本无人可以模仿。“他对大众音乐的理解是一种概念上的交响乐，并且像‘大乐队’（Big Band）一样全面使用所有的琴键，揉合极度反差的结构和巨大的变化” －－ J. Bradford Robinson, 《Erroll (Louis) Garner》。 最成功的莫过于他在曲调的节奏之中，牢牢抓住听众心绪的本领。
爵士钢琴是对钢琴家演奏爵士乐时所应用的技巧的统称。大一点说，该词也可以用在使用同样技巧的任何键盘乐器上。自从其肇始以来，钢琴就是爵士乐的一大组成部分，无论是独奏还是合奏；其角色具有多样性，很大程度上是因为钢琴兼有旋律和和声两大特色。因此，爵士钢琴也是理解爵士乐理论和创作爵士乐的重要工具。在爵士乐中，钢琴也是少有的几个可以演奏和弦的乐器（包括爵士吉他、颤音琴以及其它键盘乐器），而不是仅能发出单音（例如萨克斯管和小号）。
