一提起“百老汇”人们便会很自然地想到美国戏剧。“百老汇”是纽约市曼哈顿区的一条大街的名称。在这条大街的中段一直是美国商业性戏剧娱乐的中心，因此“百老 音乐剧汇”就成为美国戏剧活动的代名词了。百老汇曾经有非常辉煌的历史，这是与美国商业音乐剧的历史密切相联系的。百老汇音乐剧（Broadway Musicals)的前身是黑人游艺表演、滑稽剧、歌舞杂剧等，比较多地受爵士乐、摇摆乐的影响，其舞蹈有独创的百老汇风格。

很多音乐剧后来又被移植为歌舞片，而剧场版本和电影版本并不一定完全相同。《西城故事》（West Side Story）是其中一个将舞台版本成功移植为电影版本的音乐剧，在横街小巷取景，开创了后来很多音乐电影的先河。亦有歌舞片移植为音乐剧的例子，例如《雨中曲》（Singing in the Rain）是先有歌舞片，后来才被移植成音乐剧。
