He started on piano at 13 and dropped out of school the following year to devote himself to his music, memorizing rags by ear because he had not yet learned to read music. Robinson began serious lessons the following year and gradually gained a reputation. Reginald Robinson has recorded several solo piano albums for Delmark, the first cut when he was 20. Almost all the songs he has recorded are his own, and they fit squarely into the classic rag tradition.
