by Sean CooperGerhard Potuznik and Tex Rabinowitz combine '70s-style vocal techno-pop arrangements with grubby electronica and indie rock under the name Mause. Reportedly the duo's attempt to fuse an admiration for such far-reaching influences as Depeche Mode, the Melvins, and early-'80s American breakdance music, Mause are almost as bizarre in delivery as in description. Short for "Die Mause" (the mice), Mause formed in Vienna in 1996, and released their first material through Falsch, an Internet-based sublabel of Mego (for whom Potuznik has also recorded under his own name). The group released its proper debut, Teen Riot Gunther-Strackture, shortly after. A more than album-length dismantling of stylistic barriers, Teen Riot moves at an almost schizophrenic clip through new wave, techno, electro-jazz, trip-hop, indie, and pop, combining the representative features of each into a dense, often comical amalgam. Mego co-released Mause's second album, Made in Japan, in 1998 with Morbid Records. The group perform live regularly, and Potuznik and Rabinowitz also record under the name Gerhard Deluxe for the Cheap and Craft labels.
