by Bradley TorreanoThe Paybacks came swaggering out of Detroit at the turn of the century, when like-minded artists like the White Stripes and the Go were creeping into the rock mainstream with a similar sound. Consisting of singer/guitarist Wendy Case, drummer Pat Pantano, bassist Marc Watt, and guitarist Marco Delicato, the members had put in time in several high-profile local bands before joining forces to create their unique brand of poppy rock. Drummer Mike Latulippe and bassist John Szymanski filled the vacancies left by Pantano and Watt when they exited the group, solidifying the lineup right when they were ready to start playing live. Their first major recorded effort was a track on Sympathy for the Record Industry's Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit, but the full-length Knock Loud appeared on Get Hip Records in 2002. The wittily named Harder and Harder arrived two years later. The band managed to make some television appearances in 2004, snagging a couple spots on NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly. They recorded their third full-length, Love, Not Reason, in spring 2006, and the album was released later that year.
