Oakland, California's Neung Phak (pronounced: noong-pAHk) have carved out nearly a decade's worth of unique recordings and performance. Formed in 2001 as a spin-off of the shape-shifting group Mono Pause (which vaguely translates to &Neung Phak& in Thai), The 7-piece group plays a wide range of folk and pop sounds from Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam and elsewhere, using a variety of Western and non-Western instruments – inspired by cassette tapes, LPs and radio broadcasts
harvested during years of travels. Neung Phak delivers international sounds that trade the gloss and sheen of so-called “World Music” for the energy and unpredictability you might actually find if you were somewhere else.
