by Alex HendersonIn the early 2000s, X27 reminded listeners that punky alternative rock could be discordant, noisy, jagged and distorted but still be infectious, hooky and not without a willingness to groove. The trio (which was formed in Chicago) brings a variety of influences to the table; Sonic Youth is a strong influence, as are Lydia Lunch, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks and various no-wave agitators of the ‘80s. The name X27 was inspired by a character in German director Joseph von Sternberg's 1931 spy thriller Dishonored, which starred the late actress/singer Marlena Dietrich as a Viennese prostitute turned spy who used Agent X27 as her code name. In the group X27, the lead vocals have been shared by two people: guitarist Rikkeh Suhtn, a.k.a. Rikkeh X, and bassist Carmen X--and together, they provide the sort of male/female vocal juxtaposition that Exene Cervenka and John Doe offered in the '80s punk/post-punk band X. Suhtn is best known for fronting the mid-‘90s outfit Duotron (which enjoyed a small cult following), and he is also an ex-member of the bands Hwaseem and Cornelius Gomez. When it comes to drummers, X27 has been a revolving door. The duo's former drummers include Amanda X and Sisca, among others; in 2002 and 2003, X27's drummer was Oran Cannfield, a.k.a. Oran X (formerly of the San Francisco-based bands Caroliner and Dig That Body Up It's Alive). In 2001, X27 recorded an EP titled Product, which they released on their own label X27 Labs. The following year, X27 signed with the New York-based Narnack Records and recorded their album, Your Neu Favourite Band, which Narnack released in May 2003.
