by William RuhlmannThe Athens, GA, musical collective Dark Meat were formed by singer/guitarist Jim McHugh and bassist Ben Clack after they moved to Athens from North Carolina in 2004 and met guitarist Kris Deason (of Subversivo) and drummer Forrest Leffer (formerly of Carrie Nations) while working at a downtown restaurant. The group grew from there to include second drummer Chris "SpiritBird" Bradley (later replaced by Jason Robira), a backup vocal trio dubbed the Subtweeters (Heather Heyn-Leffer, Page Campbell, and Claire Campbell), and a horn section led by Charlie Estes (trumpet) and Aaron Jollay (trombone), and featuring reed players Jeff Tobias, Alexis Daglis, and Becky Noble. Additional members included fiddle and bass clarinet player John Fernandes (formerly of Elf Power and Circulatory System), percussionist Chris Smith, and Michael "Toshira" Davis on didgeridoo. Dark Meat released their debut album, Universal Indians, through Cloud Recordings on October 24, 2006.
