by Kenyon HopkinThe Brooklyn-based lo-fi Flying create songs from a junkyard of instrumentation -- including broken pianos and old accordions -- which is balanced by fragile vocals. Coinciding with the unconventional songwriting, visual artist Sara Magenheimer met Eliot Krimsky when she was building a two-headed dog from snow and met Eben Portnoy just after he was injured in a bike accident. The Massachusetts natives added Mike Johnson on drums. Recorded at homes, beaches, fields, and barns, Just-One-Second-Ago-Broken Eggshell is the debut album, its title taken from a quote by Buckminster Fuller. Flying has shared stages with Deerhoof, Lavender Diamond, and the Dirty Projectors.Early in 2008, the band's second album Faces of the Night was released by Menlo Park.
