Larry Stephenson learned the guitar and mandolin from his father and formed his first bluegrass band by the time he was in high school. After playing with Cliff Waldron for a short time, Bill Harrell and His Virginians (1979-1983), and the Bluegrass Cardinals (1983-1989), Stephenson began a solo career and released Born to Sing on the Pinecastle label. On Fire followed in 1998.
