by Sandra BrennanSinger/comic/musician Little Roy Lewis was an integral part of the Lewis Family bluegrass-gospel band. Born and raised the youngest member of a large family in Lincolnton, Georgia, Lewis began playing banjo at age six and won his first talent contest at age eight. When he was nine, Little Roy joined the family band after his older brother Esley entered the Army. In 1954, the Lewis clan began performing regularly on WJBF-TV Augusta. Little Roy appeared on all of his familys albums, but he also cut a few banjo records of his own, beginning with an EP on Starday in the early 60s. In 1968, he recorded his first full-length album, Golden Gospel Banjo. Lewis was a popular member of his family band and was known for offering lively chatter and comical sound effects during such songs as Honey in the Rock.
