by Sean CooperAn only periodically revisited side project of producers Mark Broom and Ed Handley and Andy Turner of Plaid, Repeat have nonetheless issued a relative wealth of material in their short existence. Beginning with their 1996 A13 debut, Repeats, the group also released a selection from that album on Jonah Sharps Reflective label as the South of Market EP. A four-track EP, Canada, followed in 1997 on Brooms Unexplored Beats label (named for his London studios, where all Repeat material thus far has been conceived). The group have also contributed tracks to various compilations, including A13s celebrated Experimenta, also featuring material by the Black Dog, Thomas P. Heckmann, and a solo Broom. Musically, Repeat is closer to Plaids funky brand of listening techno than Brooms more straight-ahead, booming fare, with Canada containing the chunkiest of the groups tracks. Heavily syncopated and with an emphasis on movement and development, the group incorporate rhythms less traveled, shifting percussion elements in ways that confound expectation, similar in respects to Plaids work with Ken Downie as the Black Dog (particularly on the latters Bytes).
