艺人介绍

by Ron WynnGeorge Walker AKA Big Nick Nicholas is both a rousing, heavy-voiced vocalist and robust instrumentalist. Hes been unable to get steady work except for a brief period in the mid-80s when he was a near celebrity thanks to a pair of India Navigation albums. Nicholas studied piano and clarinet as a child and played sax with Hank and Thad Jones while a teen. He played in the early 40s with Earl Hines and Tiny Bradshaw, then went into the army. After his discharge Nicholas played with Sabby Lewis, J.C. Heard and Lucky Millinder. He began playing with Hot Lips Page in 1947 and worked with him until 1954. Nicholas also played in Dizzy Gillespies big band in 1947. He became celebrated for his role in a series of Harlem jam sessions in 1950 and 1951 at the Paradise Club, where his shouting vocal style emerged. He played in vocalist Timmie Rogers band with Jonah Jones in 1953, and with Buck Clayton in 1955. Coltrane recorded Big Nick in 1962, but it didnt generate much improvement in Nicholas career. Then in 1984 the album Big and Warm was issued by India Navigation, and Nicholas briefly was in the limelight. The followup album Big Nick was equally outstanding, but neither generated much sales force and Nicholas was soon in the background again. Neither of the albums are currently available on CD.
