by Steve KurutzLiving up to his name, Seattles Conrad Uno, who owns and operates both Egg studios and the Pop Llama label, is certainly a singular and unique talent. A true DIY-er, Uno has consistently created and recorded music done for its own sake rather than for any stabs at commerciality. After recording his own off-beat home demos as a teenager Uno was ushered into the world of music production by his friends, the Young Fresh Fellows, who insisted he record their debut album, Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest, in his makeshift basement studio. The sonic structure of the album—howling guitars, sloppy playing and lots of mistakes left in for the character they bring—still defines Unos style to this day. Throughout the 80s Uno quietly released albums on his Pop Llama label and produced friends records in his basement studio (which includes an original console from Stax studios). But, just like it affected the lives of so many other Pacific Northwesterners, the grunge revolution of the early 90s gave Uno a flirtation with mainstream success when he produced Mudhoneys Piece of Cake for Reprise and The Presidents of the USA self titled debut for Columbia. Though he never capitalized on the right place/right time aspects of the alternative movement, Uno doesnt see it as any great loss that he hasnt made millions by producing corporate music. Instead, he prefers to produce the types of records made by the non-descript kids up the block whove just formed a wildly archaic sounding new band.
