The Blue Canyon Boys are equal parts purists and innovators when it comes to bluegrass: they stay true to the form’s roots while constantly re-imagining their relationship to tradition. The result is a toe-tapping mix of haunting standards, genre-bending arrangements, and catchy original numbers—all built on the bedrock of their collective bluegrass mastery. The Blue Canyon Boys (Gary Dark/mandolin, Jason Hicks/guitar, Drew Garrett/bass, Chris Roszell/banjo) have honed their distinctive sound from performing together for over a decade, moving easily from instrumental wizardry and playful ribbing to soulful vocal quartets. With their 7th album due for release this spring, the Colorado quartet brings it all: seamless brother-duet style, crisp instrumentation, unvarnished lyrics, and subversive humor all swung together into their own hard-hitting bluegrass groove.
Kentucky native Gary Dark plays the mandolin & contributes many original songs to the band. His amazing tenor singing puts the “high” in the band’s high lonesome sound. Gary’s soaring voice often elicits enthusiastic responses from audiences, and his unique, high-speed mandolin style adds to the musical excitement.
Guitarist Jason Hicks also writes material for the band, & his interest in pioneering guitarists such as Don Reno & Norman Blake has helped him to develop a style that draws from the raw emotional energy of the past. Jason’s knowledge about the early pioneers of bluegrass guitar landed him a feature article in Flatpicking Guitar magazine, for which he has also appeared as a guest columnist. Jason’s unique vocal style plays a key role in the Blue Canyon Boys’ sound.
Drew Garrett slaps a mean bass & and sings baritone vocals with the band. His credits include the innovative 1980s new grass band “Danger in the Air”, whose members went on to play with bands such as The Dixie Chicks & The John Jorgenson Quintet. Drew also performed with and recorded two albums with The Domestic Science Club on Discovery/Elektra Records.
In 2017, Chris Roszell moved from North Carolina to Denver to plug into the Colorado music scene. In North Carolina, he played in the Big Fat Gap - an enthusiastically local bluegrass band that served as the training ground for future bluegrass stars, including members of Leftover Salmon, John Stickley Trio, Town Mountain, Mandolin Orange, and others. Wielding his banjo, Chris Roszell plays more notes than any other member of the Blue Canyon Boys.
