Life and career
Alina Baraz is a singer and songwriter whose uniformly mellow material flits between downtempo electronica and slightly left-of-center R&B. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio but based in Los Angeles, California following a creative epiphany, Baraz gained some notice in 2013 through her collaborations with producers Galimatias ("Drift," "Make You Feel") and ESTA ("Paradise"). Baraz and Denmark native Galimatias developed a deeper creative partnership, instigated by Baraz via Soundcloud, which birthed Urban Flora. Credited to both artists, the eight-track EP was released by the Ultra label in May 2015 and debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at number 111.
She is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and the first child in her family born in America, Alina was introduced to music at a young age by her classically-trained parents. At 19, she discovered her passion for songwriting during the creation of her first song Roses Dipped in Gold. Following her discovery, Alina withdrew from college, relocating to Los Angeles to pursue her music career full-time.
Alina eventually caught the attention of electronic musician Galimatias, who she connected with via SoundCloud after writing and recording her own lyrics over one of his previously-released instrumentals, which would ultimately become their first collaboration, entitled "Drift". Alina and Galimatias soon began working on additional songs together, releasing the single Make you Feel plus an EP, which includes Drift and Pretty Thoughts. They recently followed up that project with the new single titled Fantasy, which will appear on the EP Urban Flora this spring, a comprehensive trove of their collaborations to date.
