Superficially, it would seem relatively easy to define Lowtide’s music. Their reverb drenched, richly layered and heavily textured sound brings to mind bands such as The Cure, Ride, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. However, to categorise their sound as simply “shoegaze” is to miss the point entirely.
Originally known as Three Month Sunset and centered around the solo workings of Gabriel Lewis, the band came together in 2008.
Renamed Lowtide in 2010, the band's sound evolved from a single ambient, soaring, textured guitar into the band's current, larger configuration framed by dual bassists/vocalists Lucy Buckeridge and Giles Simon and drummer Anton Jakovljevic.
The same year the band released an EP You Are My Good Light to a sold out crowd at Cherry Bar in Melbourne and played shows with A Place To Bury Strangers (USA), Steve Kilbey (The Church) & Ricky Maymi (Brian Jonestown Massacre). 2011 saw Lowtide travel to New Zealand, where they were invited to play two sets at the Campus a Low Hum Festival, sharing the stage with the likes of Caribou, My Disco and Toro Y Moi, as well as playing at Applecore Festival in Melbourne. After releasing their two-track single Underneath Tonight on Departed Sounds in May 2011 and playing launch shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Lowtide shared stages with bands such as Royal Baths (NYC), The Laurels, Beaches, New War and Good Heavens . The band were also invited to headline a show for Melbourne Music Week 2012.
The band kicked off 2013 with a February residency at The Toff in Town and a stand-out set at Boogie! Festival in Victoria. Whilst working on their debut album the band played sold out shows with The Underground Lovers, Black Cab and HTRK, headlined Fasterlouder’s Melbourne Music Week show in November and played a number of other support and headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney. A forthcoming track from the album was also previewed by Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins, Bella Union) on XFM London.
