by Craig HarrisSouth Africas jazz tradition started in the 1950s by such influential musicians as Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) and Hugh Masekela was inherited by saxophonist, percussionist, and composer Makhaya Mahlangu. Along with guitarist/vocalist Sipho Gumede and keyboardist Jabu Nkosi, Mahlangu formed one of South Africas greatest Afro-fusion bands, Sakhile, in 1982. During the little more than a decade that they were together, Sakhile helped bring the jazz of South Africa to the international stage. Since the groups disbanding in 1995, Mahlangu has remained active as a session musician and has performed with Moses Molelekwa, Sibongile Khumalo, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, and African jazz originators Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela. Together with bassist Victor Ntoni, Mahlangu arranged and directed The Untold Story, a tribute to the jazz musicians of the past. In addition to being presented at the Agfa Theater on the Square in Sandton, the show was broadcast on SABC2. Mahlangu has also performed with Iconoclast, a group featuring four generations of musicians.
