by Richard SkellyThe Memphis Pilgrims, led by guitarist, singer and songwriter Michael Falzarano, have one album out on the Brooklyn-based Relix Records label. Falzarano is a name familiar to followers of Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen; the two frequently perform together at coffeehouses and clubs around the U.S. and Europe. Falzarano's songs appear on the Hot Tuna albums A Pair a Dice Found and Live at Sweetwater. Falzarano has also written songs for several of Kaukonen's solo albums, including Land of Heroes and Christmas, both for the American Heritage label.
The group plays heavily blues-based melodic roots-rock. Members of the Memphis Pilgrims include guitarist Jimmy Eppard, bassist Steve Rust, drummer Harvey Sorgen and keyboardist/accordionist Adam Hurwitz. All have extensive backgrounds as sidemen and studio session musicians. Eppard, based in Woodstock, N.Y., has recorded with members of the Band, the New Bohemians, Pete Seeger and Orleans. Eppard is also an accomplished lap steel and slide guitar player. Bassist Rust has performed with jazz flutist Hubert Laws, Sam and Dave and jazz saxophonist Nick Brignola. Drummer/percussionist Sorgen has performed and recorded with Ahmad Jamal, Bill Frisell, NRBQ, David Torn and Jack DeJohnette. Keyboardist and accordionist Hurwitz has worked with the Band and Ronnie Hawkins, among others.
Their debut album, Mecca, blends elements of rockabilly, blues and soul music with the band's roots-rock base.
