In an era of over-night sensations that fizzle as quickly as they spark, and a time when music seems often overshadowed by a side show of special effects, daredevil costumes and lip-synching illusionists, it's a relief to know that there are still bands out there that are the real thing: bands who play their own instruments, write their own songs, and have the musical chemistry that can only come from playing and touring together for over a decade. This is Raining Jane.

It wasn't long after their first show at UCLA in 1999, that the four women of Raining Jane hit the road to make music their full-time gig. With their original blend of indie-rock-folk, they launched into a hefty touring schedule, performing over 120 shows per year (for 6 years straight), all independently booked and managed. From colleges to concert halls, from supporting tours for Sara Bareilles to headlining their own shows, Raining Jane became an example of indie success.

In 2007 their career took an exciting turn when they began writing with Jason Mraz, initiating a creative partnership that continues to the present day. One of their co-writes, A Beautiful Mess, appeared on Mraz's platinum album "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things," while another, Collapsible Plans was featured in the Cannes-Selection documentary "The Big Fix," which earned a Hollywood Music and Media Award for Best Song in a Film. In 2012, Mona Tavakoli (percussion/backup vocals) joined Mraz on his world tour, venturing as far as Antarctica and Myanmar. The ever-evolving collaboration between Mraz and Raining Jane reached a new level in 2013 with multiple writing and recording sessions, a tour and plans for more exciting collaborations in 2014.

Over the years Raining Jane has released four albums, with The Good Match as their latest flame. The album showcases the band's uplifting and heartfelt songwriting, as well as rich vocal harmonies and diverse instrumentation (guitars, cello, cajon, sitar, bass.) Their music can be heard elsewhere with songs appearing on shows like Grey's Anatomy, So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With The Stars. They've also played on records for other artists such as Willy Porter's How To Rob A Bank.

In addition to their musical work as a band, Raining Jane has always been passionate about community outreach. In 2010 they established Rock n' Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles, a non-profit dedicated to empowering girls through music education. Now in its fifth year, the organization has reached over 300 young girls, has inspired the help of hundreds of volunteers, and has provided a vibrant, creative resource for Los Angeles.

Mona Tavakoli

drums / vocals / percussion

Mona Tavakoli was crowned Little Miss San Jose in 1984, (for her riveting Persian dance performance) and since then, she has been on the fast track to stardom. Playing the drums since she was 11 years old, Mona now incorporates the cajon, jangley ankles, vocals, and wisecracks into her performances, along with her drum kit.

After a two-year stint playing Josie Bruin, UCLA's official mascot, she helped form the Los Angeles-based band Raining Jane in 1999, releasing three studio albums since 2001 and touring relentlessly, averaging over 120 shows a year since 2004.

With Raining Jane, Mona has toured with the likes of Sara Bareilles, Rachael Yamagata and Willy Porter. Raining Jane co-wrote the song "A Beautiful Mess" with Jason Mraz which appears on Mraz's full-length album, We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things and was recently featured on ABC's So You Think You Can Dance. "Prelude," a song from Raining Jane's 2008 album, Paper Nest, was featured in a particular weepy, melodramatic scene on the fifth season of Grey's Anatomy.

In 2010, Mona co-founded the Rock & Roll Camp For Girls Los Angeles, a non-profit organization that encourages young girls to find their voices through music. An intensive one-week day camp, girls ages 8-17 learn to play various instruments, form a band, write a song, and perform at the end of week sold out showcase for friends and family. The girls at Rock Camp call her "Principal Mona". Mona continues to contribute to music education by hosting rhythm workshops at elementary schools, summer camps, colleges, and highway truck stops.

As a solo percussionist, Mona has performed in Morocco, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland with Jason Mraz, at the George Lucas Skywalker Ranch with Lucy Schwartz, as well as at Michael Jackson's 40th birthday party at Neverland Ranch (she fed his giraffe. It was weird). In September 2010, Mona appeared on A&E's Private Sessions with Pat Benatar, where she performed an acoustic set of Benatar's most popular songs alongside Benatar and her husband, Spyder Giraldo.

She continues to tour with Raining Jane and as a solo percussionist alongside acclaimed musicmakers such as Tristan Prettyman, Willy Porter, Lucy Schwartz, Lindsay Mac, Natalia Zukerman, Andy Grammer and Keaton Simmons. She recently designed her own cajon, dubbed "The MT Box" in conjunction with Kotz Cajon (www.themtbox.com). Mona is endorsed by Sabian cymbals, Vater sticks and Sennheiser microphones.

When not making music, Mona can be found getting massages in Silverlake, CA and being late for lunches with her two younger sisters.

Mai Bloomfield

vocals / guitar / cello

Born in Santa Monica, California, Mai was raised in a family of artists and musicians. She started playing cello at age 9, and by 16 she was playing and writing her own songs on guitar. Out of college, Mai joined her first band, which would become Raining Jane, with whom she's been able to grow as a musician for over a decade.

In addition to her work with Raining Jane, Mai supports other artists in the studio and on the road. She's been on The Tonight Show with Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson, and has played on records for many other artists such as Dan Wilson and Adam Cohen. In 2011 Mai joined Cohen on an extensive international tour, both as an opening artist as well as part of his trio, with shows reaching from Canada to Europe and Australia.

In 2010 Mai released a solo EP "Eclipse," and she has been recognized for her songwriting with awards from the Telluride, Kerrville and Rocky Mountain Folk Festivals. She enjoys teaching songwriting at various music camps, and collaborating with other artists -including the blank page- as a means to keep digging deeper into the art and mystery of songwriting and musical expression.

Chaska Potter

vocals / guitar

From 1890-1920 a group called "Cheeruptimus" traveled through the U.S sharing their music and their stories with all who would listen. These musicians, Grace and James Potter, were Chaska Potter's great grandparents. From them a love of music has been passed down the family tree, characterizing the heart and soul of the Potter clan.

The third of six children, Chaska was born in a cabin in the Santa Cruz mountains of California. Her parents have always said that musical participation was a prerequisite to joining the family; it wasn't an option. As soon as Chaska could talk she was singing (so the story goes), and by age 8, she was playing the piano. Papa would have the kids up in the morning at 5am, to jam for a couple hours in the garage/studio before skipping off to work and school. "The Potter Family Singers" performed around Santa Cruz County at convalescent homes, dances for handicap children, and holiday events of every kind.

Reaching her current height of 6'1 at the age of 14, Chaska had the attention of every sports coach in the county, as well as some college coaches around the nation. Playing volleyball, basketball and track & field, sports became her main focus. One of Chaska's coaches told her that "if you want to be the best, you have to pick one thing and devote all of your time to it". Thank goodness she didn't take that one seriously! A desire for diversity and versatility, Chaska continued to participate in three sports at Aptos High School, as well as singing in the treble and jazz choir. Her senior year, Chaska won the award for "Athlete of The Year" in Santa Cruz County and was heading to UCLA on a full scholarship to play volleyball.

As a high school graduation gift, Chaska's parents gave her a guitar and she was off to LA. She began learning to play through a correspondence with her dad in which she would send him songs she wanted to learn, and he would send back chords and charts of how to play them. Although most of her time was dedicated to volleyball, Chaska would make time to go to open mics around town and to play in coffee shops whenever she could. It was not until spring quarter of her third year (1998) that Chaska was introduced to the women of Chrysalis, as she sat in the audience of UCLA's Spring Sing and watched them perform. A few weeks later she went to The Coffee Bean to watch them perform again, where she was asked to join them to sing Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams". Soon after that performance, Mona called her and asked her to join the band.

Grateful for this opportunity to play and create with other musicians, Chaska was thrilled to join the women of Chrysalis (soon to be Raining Jane). She has since acquired the ability to play bar chords and use a wammy bar, play one song on the bass and one on the djembe, and has found her best friends. Inspired by the harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; the guitar jams of Dave Matthews; the lyrics and passion of Ani Difranco; and the attitude of Joan Jett; Chaska continues to search for her own sound.

Becky Gebhardt

bass / guitar / sitar

Becky Gebhardt was born and raised in Los Angeles. She's self-taught on bass and guitar, and has studied the sitar with Shujaat Khan at UCLA and Paul Livingstone. Becky is Co-Director of Rock n' Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles.
