by Stewart MasonPicking up on the sound and inspirations of obvious influences like Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Kiss Kiss go even further in bringing the ghosts of 1970s progressive rock kicking and screaming into the contemporary indie rock scene. In particular, Kiss Kiss are defined by their extensive use of the electric violin, an instrument last seen showcased in the Canadian cult favorites FM, whose leader Nash the Slash wielded an electric violin while dressed head to toe in mummy bandages. Kiss Kiss were formed by singer and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Benash and drummer Jared Karns while they were attending the State University of New York at Purchase; the name came from a favorite book of ghost stories by British author Roald Dahl. After cycling through several different lineups that featured no less than three different violinists at various times, Kiss Kiss eventually settled on a permanent lineup of Karns; Benash on vocals, guitar, and synthesizer; second guitar and synthesizer player Mike Abiuso; bassist Pat Lamothe; and electric violinist Rebecca Schlappich. Kiss Kiss signed to the New Jersey-based indie Eyeball Records (My Chemical Romance, the Number Twelve Looks Like You, etc.), and released their self-titled debut EP in 2005. The full-length Reality vs. the Optimist was released in February 2007.
