1984年的德国，18岁的Hansi Kürsch与他的同窗好友André Olbrich组建自己的四人乐队“Lucifer's Heritage”，那时的成员除了担任主唱兼贝司的Hansi和吉他手Andre之外还有Markus Dörk（吉他手）、Thomas "Thomen" Stauch（鼓手）。

1985到1986的两年里，乐队经历了成员改革——Markus Dörk（吉他手）和Thomen Stauch （鼓手）分别被Christof Theißen和Hans-Peter Frey取代。直到1987年吉他手Marcus Siepen加入，而Thomen Stauch又重归乐队，成员班子真正形成了众所熟知的样子。而也在那短短两年里，乐队推出了自己的两张demo——《Symphonies of Doom》和《Battalions of Fear》。

在与德国唱片公司“No Remorse Records”签约后，乐队正式更名为“Blind Guardian”。1988年，Blind Guardian发行了他们的首张专辑，极富速度和力量的《Battalions of Fear》。在这张专辑发行后的第一场巡演上，从克雷菲尔德来的fans一夜有150到300人之间。1989年发行《Follow the Blind》之后，一次事故让他们不得不放弃原有的巡演计划。但在以后几年里，BG通过努力飞速弥补上那些失去的机会，第三张专辑《Tales from the Twilight World》已经增添了很多史诗气氛，而BG在德国巡演的三周，在每场音乐会上的观众也有500至800人。

1991年BG与Virgin Records签约并在92年发行了《Somewhere Far Beyond》。这张长约55分28秒的第四张专辑之发行在国际上一举成功，尤其在日本，BG首次出国在远东的巡回演唱会上，台下满坐4000名观众，那是BG事业走向成功的转折期！随之，BG的首张现场专辑《Tokyo Tales》也在1993年发行。

曾任Metallica等乐队的制作人Flemming Rasmussen取代了原先的Kalle Trapp，期间发行了《Imaginations from the Other Side》（1995），此专辑发行之后，BG的演唱会巡回遍了全欧洲，也是从这张专辑中，BG挑选出单曲单独发行（《A Past and Future Secret》、《Bright Eyes》）。1996年发行了一张精选专辑《Forgotten Tales》，其中包含了6首是翻唱。

1998年发行了他们获得巨大成功的概念专辑《Nightfall in Middle-Earth》，整张专辑灵感来源于JRR托尔金的《精灵宝钻》，以力量金属演奏了这场传奇。BG在这之后的巡演多的前所未有，甚至到了中南美洲的墨西哥、巴西、阿根廷……

2005年4月①鼓手Thomen Stauch因分歧再次离开乐队，Frederik Ehmke接任此职，并兼长笛和风笛。06年9月乐队推出了第八张专辑《A Twist in the Myth》，其中《Fly》是新鼓手Ehmke参与的第一支单曲。

随着“Blind Guardian”这个名字年继一年地名扬四方，2007年BG参与了电影《In The Name Of The King – Dungeon Siege》的音乐制作；2008年乐队为角色扮演游戏《Sacred II》创作歌曲。

不知从何时起，托尔金的名著《Lord of rings》系列作品开始不断启发着无数音乐家的创作灵感，在这幅无限宽广、壮丽的奇幻画卷中，各路音乐人在其中施展着自己的才华：从古典到New Age，从摇滚到重金属，《Lord of rings》经久不衰的神话被一次又一次的传颂着。来自德国的力量金属乐队BLIND GUARDIAN（盲目守卫者）应该算是较早的将《Lord of rings》引入金属音乐中的先行者。早在1988年，乐队的首张专辑《Battalions of Fear》中，4位年轻的乐手试图用激情肆溅的速度金属曲风，演绎出故事中那种魔幻、神奇的意境。尽管在事物发展初期必定要经历稚嫩的阶段，但潜力隐含在这张作品之中，蓄势待发。

而后，乐队又陆续推出了《Follow the blind》（1989）与《Tales From the Twilight World》（1990）两张专辑。从而确立起他们在亚洲（日本）与欧洲金属乐坛中的地位。尤其是后者的发行，它令越来越多的歌迷被BG宽广、澎湃的音乐所折服，同时，也使乐队的唱片销量达到前所未有的成绩。此外，也正是这张专辑的成功使乐队得到了与著名唱片公司Virgen Records的签约机会。

Forming in the small German town of Krefeld, Blind Guardian perfected a fusion of Gothic- and fantasy-tinged European power metal with the velocity and technical precision of speed metal. Members Hansi Kürsch (vocals, bass), Marcus Siepen (guitar), André Olbrich (guitar), and Thomas Stauch (drums) initially called themselves Lucifers Heritage, but elected to change when a 1986 demo tape began to achieve underground popularity. They signed with the No Remorse label and issued Battalions of Fear in 1988, following it with Follow the Blind a year later, which helped make a name for the band in Japan. 1990s Tales from the Twilight World became an underground hit in Germany and led to a deal with that countrys division of Virgin Records; their major-label debut, Somewhere Far Beyond, was released in 1992. After 1993s live Tokyo Tales, Blind Guardian hooked up with former Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen for 1995s Imaginations from the Other Side. 1996s The Forgotten Tales was a collection of covers and alternate versions, setting the stage for 1998s Nightfall in Middle-Earth, a Tolkien-inspired concept album which finally became the bands first American release a year later. Century Media began reissuing portions of the bands back catalog in the U.S. the same year.
