by Dave NathanBorn in upstate New York, but musically educated in the South, Cole Broderick now leads a quartet in the once famous watering hole for the rich and famous, Saratoga New York. After graduating from Floridas Miami University in 1969, he began his professional career performing at local clubs. In the mid-80s, Broderick moved to Saratoga where he began to work full-time on a career in music, both as a performer and composer. Broderick fell in love with Saratoga when vacationing there as a youngster. Forming the Cole Broderick Quartet in 1993, he started a series of recordings with that group designed to capture in song the essence of the seasons in and around Saratoga. Since 1994, he has issued four albums, Spring, Autumn, Summer and in 1998, his last, Winter, for his own company, Cole Broderick Recordings. These discs have also been released in a 4-CD boxed set which was awarded a Critics Choice rating from Billboard Magazine. The Quartet has played Utica Fest and Bennington Jazz Festivals. 1993 was a major milestone for the Quartet in its relatively short history when they appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, sharing the stage with such luminaries as Joe Henderson, Tony Bennett and Aretha Franklin. A further boost to Brodericks career is a recent contract with the Aradia Group, a division of BMI which will handle and promote Brodericks compositions. Broderick cites as early musical influences Louis Armstrong, Errol Garner and Nick Brignola all of whom he saw perform as a youngster in Albany, NY. As he moved on to college, he listened to Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley, and began to shape his own style.Brodericks Quartet continues to play at festivals and jazz venues in upper New York State, including a steady gig at the Van Dyck in Schenectady, N.Y. Broderick also spends considerable time composing new music for future releases which he plans to use as a springboard from regional to national exposure.
