Taegŭm performer, composer and researcher, Hyelim Kim, is opening new possibilities for Korean music by using a traditional Korean instrument, the taegŭm, as a tool to promote exchange with a wide-variety of musical cultures. Kim obtained her undergraduate and masters degrees from Seoul National University, and as a current Ph.D. student in ethnomusicology at SOAS within the University of London, she is conducting research on the globalization of Korean music.
Kim is now receiving attention as a young performer who is taking a lead role in breathing new life into Korean traditional music. She has been selected as the pioneering artist of 2009-2010 by the Korean Arts Council; was a performer at the New York Omi Residency in 2009; and was selected as the Kumho Young Artist for 2006. She has held performances overseas including three recitals and performances at the 2High Festival (Australia), the Omi World Music Concert (New York), the Sori Art Electroacoustic Concert (Australia), the NZEMS (New Zealand), Ethno Sweden (Sweden), Fest der Innenhöfe (Germany) and the World Classics (England). These performances provided audiences with the opportunity to experience Kim’s own musical compositions, and she is presently working to expand her performances to an even greater audience worldwide.
Academically, Kim is making an effort to systematically chart the traditional music of Korea and has taken part in a number of international academic conferences related to music including: the Cultural Diversity in Music Education Conference (Australia); the Symposium on Asian Musical and Visual Cultures (Australia); the 2010 International Council for Traditional Music MEA (Korea); and the New Zealand Electroacoustic Music Symposium (New Zealand); Society for Ethnomusicology (The U.S.); Past, Present and Future: The Diversity and Distinctiveness of Korean Music and Dance Symposium (England) and many others. She is currently in the process of writing a comprehensive Ph.D. thesis concerning world music, the taegŭm and the modernity of Korean music.
대금 연주자, 작곡가 및 민족 음악 연구자인 김혜림은 전통악기인 대금을 이용하여 다양한 음악 문화와 교류하면서 한국 음악의 새로운 가능성을 개척하고 있습니다. 그는 서울대학교 국악과에서 학사와 석사를 마치고 지금은 런던 대학교 민족음악학 박사 과정을 이수하면서, 한국 음악의 세계화를 위해 연구하고 있습니다.
김혜림은 2009-2010년 한국 문화예술위원회 영아트프론티어, 2009년 뉴욕 오마이 레지던시 음악가, 2006년 금호 영아티스트 등으로 선정되어 국내외서 활발한음악활동을하고있습니다.세번의독주회- 금호영아티스트 독주회(한국), 브리즈번 독주회(호주), 대금 독주회 ‘님’ (한국)-와 더불어 2high Festival ( 호주), 오마이 월드 뮤직 콘서트 (미국), 전자음악 콘서트 (호주), NZEMS (뉴질랜드), 소리아트 콘서트 (한국) 등을 통하여 전통 음악과 창작곡을 연주하여 국내외에서 매우 긍정적인 평가를 받았습니다.
또한민족음악연구가로서다양한국제학술행사-다문화 음악교육 컨퍼런스(호주), 2010 아시아음악 심포지움 (호주), 2010 국제전통음악학회(한국), 국제 전자음악 컨퍼런스(뉴질랜드)- 에 참여하여 전통음악의 학문적인 체계를 마련하기 위한 노력을 기울이고 있습니다. 그리고 박사과정으로대금과한국음악,세계음악에관한 심도있는 연구에 주력하고 있습니다.
그의 활발한 활동은 한국 음악의 이론적이며 실기적인 특성을 효과적으로 알림으로써 한국의 전통 음악이 세계에서 사랑 받을 수 있는 가능성을 확인시켜주고 있습니다.
