The Carnatic style is primarily a showcase for vocalists, who must present long composed pieces in addition to intense and demanding improvisations. Ramnad Krishnan began studying at the age of six and, after achieving celebrity status in both South and North India, went on to teach at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
