Sam Rosenthal在创立了《Projekt》唱片后，处于自娱自乐的考虑，组建了这支乐队，与This Mortal Coil走马灯似的换人如出一辙，除了Sam senthal，乐队其他成员一直变化不定，事实上,唯一长期的合作者只有男歌手/吉他手Oscar Herrera,因此这支乐队的身上，更多看到的是Sam个人的创作风格取向。深受卡夫卡、波德莱尔等人影响的Sam在音乐中总是充满着悲伤绝望的情绪，乐队华美的乐风，用长笛，黑管，弦乐，键盘，飘渺的女声营造出的古典而唯美的气氛，创建出Dark Wave特有的在爱与痛之间纠缠的美学。
1983年，This Mortal Coil成立于英国伦敦，乐队是由4AD公司的音乐总监Ivo Watts所创建，应该说This Mortal Coil不是一个真正意义上的乐队。作为一个成功的独立唱片厂牌，4AD需要去尝试和探索各种不同类型的音乐领域。作为This Mortal Coil里最为主要的人物，同时也是身为4AD唱片公司的老板的Ivo watts-Russell已不再局限于4AD的环境中，而是通过许多艺术家们的各具特色的风格去开创属于4AD的灵魂和精髓所在，其中包括有Ivo watts所喜爱的Syd Barrett,Alex Chilton,Talking head,Tim Buckley和Gene Clark。
This Mortal Coil的首张唱片是于1983年，由4AD发行，Tim Backley着手的。最初被当作一张B-side,然而，由于有Robin Guthrie和Cocteaus Twins的Elizabeth Fraser等人那不凡的才华的支持，这张single很快就变成了还处于地下音乐派系中的一个成功的例子。

直至今天，Watts-Russell实现了他的允诺，This Mortal Coil没有再发行过一张新的专集。但是在1993年4AD发行了一张名为《1983-1991》的4张大碟的特辑里，加入了几首在TMC的三张专集里没有被收录的曲目。

This Mortal Coil was a gothic dream pop collective led by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the British record label 4AD. Although Watts-Russell and John Fryer were technically the only two official members, the band's recorded output featured a large rotating cast of supporting artists, many of whom were signed to, or otherwise associated with, 4AD. About half of the songs released were cover versions, often of 1960s and 1970s psychedelic and folk acts. On each of the band's three LPs, at least one song would also be a cover of a 4AD artist, and most of the original songs were instrumentals.
The name "This Mortal Coil" is taken from the Monty Python's Flying Circus "Dead Parrot sketch", which in turn is a quote from Shakespeare's ‘Hamlet’.
