b. c. 1955, Mexico. As a small child Mendoza studied flute before switching to percussion. He relocated to the USA shortly before he entered his teens, studying music education and orchestral percussion at Northern Arizona University after which he went to Berklee College Of Music. After graduation from Berklee, in 1983 he became a member of the faculty. Since then he has done other teaching work including worldwide master classes, among which have been sessions at leading music academies in the UK. He has also released an educational DVD, Latin Jazz Grooves. In addition to regular performances in clubs and at concerts, Mendoza has also appeared on television in the USA, including PBS’s, Victor Mendoza In Concert, and he also recorded for BBC Television in the UK. Another UK appearance was at the Rhythm Sticks ’98 Festival at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. He also appeared as guest soloist with the Carlos Chávez Symphony Orchestra during the Festival Internacional de Percusiones in Mexico City, in Prague with the Mila Svoboda Orchestra, and with the World Festival Orchestra under the direction of Paquito D’Rivera. Among other musicians with whom Mendoza has worked are Michel Camilo, Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernández, Giovanni Hidalgo, Alain Mallet, Danilo Pérez and Claudio Roditi. Mendoza has also recorded a number of dates as leader.
