His grandfather was the society bandleader Meyer Davis and his father plays clarinet. Davis began on violin when he was four and learned classical music at the Manhattan School of Music. In Boston, he studied with Jerry Bergonzi. After recording his debut album, Dante's Blues, Davis moved to Paris, although he returned to the U.S. in 1993 in order to record Sauce.
