by Craig HarrisAffectionately known as "Divas of the Dance World," Token Women has created some of the most exciting tradition-rooted dance music to come out of England in the past decade. Centered around sisters Jo Freya (on saxophone, clarinet, and vocals) and Fi Fraser (on violin, clarinet, and vocals) and ex-Barely Works trombone and tuba player Alice Kinloch, the group sparkles with instrumental virtuosity and heartfelt vocal harmonies. While deeply embedded in the British ceilidh tradition, their incorporation of diverse influences led Dirty Linen to ask if they played "world music for bedlam sophisticates?" and tried to compare them to "the Poozies hijack the Penguin Café Orchestra and "3 Mustaphas 3 trade fezzes with Blowzabella?" The Freya sisters are no newcomers to British folk music. Fi previously played with Old Swan Band and on John Kirkpatrick's Plain Capers, while Jo was a member of trad rock group Blowzabella, and continues to lead her own band, Freya-European Women's Band, and Tanteeka. The Freyas collaborated on a duo album, The Fraser Sisters, in 1998.
