by Craig HarrisBlessed with a vocal tone that rootsworld.com praised for its "precise intonations and sunny, smiling, sound," Maria Salgado has taken the Castillan music of Spain to the international stage. Although she explored the habanera tradition of Cuba on her 1999 debut solo album, Miradante, Salgado took a more pan-Mediterranean approach with her second solo recording, Siete Modos De Guisar Las Berenjenas, including a mixture of Spanish and Sephardic tunes. Salgado made her recording debut in 1997 on an album, La Sal de la Vida, that she shared with Sudan-born and Spain-based vocalist and percussionist Rasha and Galician singer Uxia.
