b. Borges, France. Classically trained but a jazz musician by choice, Matinier’s principal instrument is the accordion. Although appropriate for a Paris-based musician, the accordion is quite uncommon in both classical music and jazz. Drawing his repertoire from both of these fields of music, the result is best described as world music but there are also vigorous dashes of southern European folk music. He played in the National Orchestre De Jazz under the direction of Claude Barthélémy during the late 80s and early 90s, playing concerts and record dates. In the early 00s, Matinier led and also recorded with a band that included in its ranks Renaud Garcia-Fons (bass), Nelson Veras (guitar) and Bobby Rangell (flute). Among musicians with whom he has played and sometimes recorded are vibraphonist David Friedman, oud player Anouar Brahem, and saxophonist Louis Sclavis. With his unusual repertoire and uncommon instrument, Martinier has attracted favourable attention from audiences and critics alike.
