by Ronnie Lankford, Jr.Molasses Creek hails from the Outer Banks of North Carolina on the picturesque island of Ocracoke. The origin of the band's name is simple for a visitor to Ocracoke Island to discern: Molasses Creek is the name of a small brook that runs across the island. The band is comprised of guitarist/vocalist Gary Mitchell, bass player/vocalist Kitty Mitchell, and vocalist/fiddler David Streicher Tweedie, better known as "Fiddler Dave." Beginning with their 1993 self-released album Ocracoke Island, Molasses Creek has displayed their trademark close harmonies, fine songwriting, and ever-present sense of humor. 1994's Ocracoke Island II continued in the same fine vein. As good as these recordings are, Molasses Creek fans realize that it is necessary to catch a live show to fully appreciate their infectious sense of humor and love of performing. During the summer they present multiple shows each week at the Deepwater Theater on Ocracoke Island, where the band has also been instrumental in promoting other local talent, like singer/songwriter Noah Paley. The band often expands to a larger unit that includes Louis Allen on harmonica/vocals, and Stan Brown on banjo, when they leave the island to perform along the coastal regions of North Carolina and Virginia. Fuller arrangements that include mandolin and lead guitar also mark both 1996's Wildheart and 1998's Citybound. Molasses Creek's songs includes folk, traditional bluegrass, and originals, making the band difficult to categorize. In the year 2000, Molasses Creek was invited to be one of six contestants on Prairie Home Companion's Talent from Towns under Two Thousand, where they won second place. A new album that will include fresh versions of old material will be released this year.
